Advancing teaching and learning through flipped classroom workshop at JMDC ahead of IMECON 2026

KARACHI: Innovative teaching methodologies are rapidly reshaping medical and dental education worldwide, and this transformation was clearly reflected in a pre-conference faculty development workshop held at Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) in the lead-up to IMECON 2026, the flagship medical education conference of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).

The immersive workshop, titled “From lecture to learning: the art of flipped classroom,” was delivered by Professor Dr Marium Iqbal, vice principal of Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC). The session was organized as part of the academic build-up to IMECON 2026, scheduled to take place on February 7 and 8, 2026, at CPSP Headquarters, Karachi.

Reimagining traditional teaching through flipped classroom methodology

The workshop provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of flipped classroom pedagogy, a learner-centered approach that shifts foundational content delivery outside the classroom while transforming in-class time into an interactive learning experience. Professor Dr Marium Iqbal explained how this model encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and active student engagement, moving beyond conventional lecture-based teaching.

Through carefully designed practical examples, structured discussions, and reflective learning activities, participants gained hands-on insight into creating effective pre-class learning materials, facilitating meaningful in-class interactions, and aligning assessment strategies with defined learning outcomes.

Engaged faculty participation, practical learning

Participants remained intellectually engaged throughout the session, actively contributing thoughtful perspectives and sharing real-world teaching challenges from their own institutions. The interactive nature of the workshop fostered collaborative learning and encouraged educators to devise innovative, context-appropriate strategies for enhancing pedagogical practices in medical and dental education.

Many attendees noted that the session helped them rethink their teaching roles, equipping them with practical tools to improve student engagement, comprehension, and long-term knowledge retention.

A strong academic precursor to IMECON 2026

The pre-conference workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with participants praising its clarity, relevance, and immediate applicability. The session stood out as a meaningful academic contribution ahead of IMECON 2026, reinforcing the shared commitment of CPSP and JMDC to advancing excellence, innovation, and quality in medical education across Pakistan.

By emphasizing evidence-based teaching strategies and structured faculty development, the workshop highlighted the growing importance of educational innovation in preparing competent, reflective, and lifelong learners in the health professions.
