Orthodontics workshop at IADSR strengthens clinical skills of general dentists

LAHORE:  A focused hands-on workshop on clinical orthodontics was successfully conducted at the Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) as part of its 18th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD). The session, conducted jointly by Dr. Rashid Mehmood (BDS; MFDS RCPS (Glasgow); M.Orth. RCS (Edinburgh); F.Orth. RCS (Edinburgh); CHPE), and Dr. Kashif Haroon (BDS; M.Orth. RCS (Edinburgh); CHPE) aimed to provide foundational training in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment techniques for general dentists.

The one-day program offered a comprehensive overview of key areas in orthodontics including preventive, interceptive, corrective, and surgical orthodontics. Experts emphasized the importance of early diagnosis of malocclusions and introduced various space maintenance and serial extraction techniques based on Dewel’s and Tweed’s philosophies.

Participants also received in-depth training in orthodontic aesthetic assessment:

  • Macro-esthetics: Facial symmetry and vertical facial proportions
  • Mini-esthetics: Tooth-lip dynamics and smile analysis
  • Micro-esthetics: Tooth size, shape, gingival contour, and golden proportions

The session also addressed Class II malocclusion, covering its diagnosis and multiple treatment options, from growth modification to orthodontic camouflage and surgical correction. Functional appliances such as twin block and headgear were discussed in detail with clinical indications and practical applications.

A major highlight of the workshop was the clinical demonstration of bonding procedures, including:

  • Enamel pre-treatment and surface preparation
  • Etching and sealant application
  • Bonding protocols for different surfaces

By the end of the session, participants had gained critical insights into foundational orthodontic procedures, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Dr. Rashid Mehmood and Dr. Kashif Haroon's expert-led workshop fulfilled its objective of equipping general dentists with practical orthodontic skills, helping them deliver better care in their daily practice. The IADSR continues to be a key player in advancing dental education in Pakistan through its skill-focused diploma programs.
