Mastering TMD and splint therapy through practical training at IADSR

LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) held a two-day, hands-on workshop on Occlusion, Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), and Splint Therapy, providing dentists with specialized clinical training and up-to-date knowledge in a crucial but often under-addressed field of dentistry. This intensive learning session, held on April 5–6, 2025, was part of the institute’s 18th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD) and led by Prof. Dr. Saad Mateen, an expert in prosthodontics from Faryal Dental College.

Workshop highlights: From occlusion concepts to splint fabrication

Participants experienced an evidence-based, clinically rich learning journey, including:

Introduction to occlusion and centric relation

  • Fundamental concepts of occlusion were explained with clarity, emphasizing the centric relation between the maxillary and mandibular arches.
  • The importance of canine guidance in functional occlusion and its implications in clinical practice were thoroughly demonstrated.

TMJ anatomy and disorders

  • In-depth anatomical review of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and its articular disc.
  • Causes and diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) were discussed, along with clinical signs and symptoms.
  • Practical training included clinical muscle examinations and TMD diagnostics.

Hands-on splint therapy

  • Dr. Saad demonstrated the fabrication of occlusal splints, followed by guided practical work by participants.
  • Real-time troubleshooting of splint-related challenges improved participants' clinical decision-making.
  • Interactive Q&A sessions allowed for case-based learning and peer exchange.

Enhancing clinical excellence in dental practice

This workshop directly addressed a growing clinical need to manage orofacial pain, bruxism, and TMJ dysfunctions through conservative modalities like splint therapy. It offered a rare opportunity to build competence in occlusal adjustments, preventive treatment planning, and non-invasive rehabilitation of TMDs.

The facilitator’s deep experience and practical demonstrations gave participants a chance to translate theory into action, which aligns with IADSR’s commitment to lifelong professional development and patient-centered care.

Final takeaways and professional impact

By the end of the workshop, dental professionals not only gained enhanced diagnostic capabilities but also left equipped to integrate splint therapy into everyday clinical protocols—ultimately benefiting patients suffering from chronic jaw pain, bite dysfunctions, and muscle disorders.
