Hands-on workshop on occlusion, TMD and splint therapy at IADSR
LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) recently conducted a two-day hands-on workshop on Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), occlusion, and splint therapy, as part of the 19th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD).

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Saad Mateen (BDS, FCPS Prosthodontics, Master Certificate – Cornell University, USA), Principal of Faryal Dental College, who provided in-depth training on clinical and theoretical aspects of TMD and occlusion.
Key highlights of the workshop
The program was structured to cover both foundational knowledge and practical training:
- Occlusion and centric relation between maxillary and mandibular teeth.
- Occlusal adjustments as a modality to improve functional patterns.
- Canine guidance and implications of its absence in clinical practice.
- Anatomy of TMJ and articular disc, disorders, and potential causes.
- Clinical examination techniques for muscles and TMD diagnosis.
In addition, splint fabrication was demonstrated by Dr. Waleed and later practiced by participants under expert supervision. The facilitator addressed challenges during fabrication and resolved participant queries in real-time.
Advancing clinical competence
The interactive nature of the sessions ensured participants not only observed but also practiced advanced techniques in diagnosis and treatment planning for TMD. By the end of the two days, the workshop successfully achieved its defined learning objectives, reinforcing IADSR’s commitment to advancing dental education in Pakistan.
