ISLAMABAD: Digital dentistry, emerging research and the increasingly important role of professional visibility and networking came together as Foundation University College of Dentistry hosted the 3rd Annual Oral Biology Seminar & 1st Digital Dentists Summit 2026 at Jinnah Auditorium, Foundation University School of Health Sciences.
Conceived by Dr. Ammar Abdullah, Head of the Department of Oral Biology at Foundation University College of Dentistry, the summit brought students, young dentists, academics and dental professionals together on a platform designed to move beyond conventional academic presentations and explore how dentists can navigate an increasingly digital profession.
The event was the culmination of an idea that Dr. Ammar Abdullah developed and nurtured before bringing it to the stage with the support of his team. Under his supervision and leadership, the organising team worked over several months to translate the concept into a full academic and professional programme.

Young dental researchers explore emerging ideas
The academic segment featured presentations by first-year dental students from Foundation University College of Dentistry and participating institutions, including Riphah International University College of Dentistry.

The presentations examined recent developments in dentistry and considered their potential implications for future research and clinical practice. The format encouraged students to look beyond the conventional undergraduate curriculum and engage with emerging areas of dental science.
The presentations were evaluated by Dr. Nauman Bari Khan, Professor and Vice Principal, Margalla Institute of Health Sciences, and Muhammad Azhar, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Oral Biology, Army Medical College.
Students from Foundation University secured the first prize at the conclusion of the academic session. Hamna Changez presented “Deciduous Autologous Tooth Stem Cell Regeneration,” while Fatima Fahad presented “Integrating Metatranscriptomics for Peri-implantitis Diagnosis.”
The two presentations reflected the breadth of subjects being explored by the participating students, ranging from regenerative approaches involving dental stem cells to the potential application of metatranscriptomic approaches in understanding peri-implant disease.
Digital dentistry moves to centre stage
The second half of the programme shifted from student research presentations to the rapidly expanding digital landscape surrounding contemporary dentistry.
The session brought together dental professionals whose careers have developed across clinical practice, education, specialist dentistry, digital communication and professional content creation.
Among the invited speakers were Dr. Syed M. Faizan, an implantologist, dental educator and Director of Vanguard Dental School; Dr. Asfand Ali Khan, a consultant endodontist and Clinical Director at Scope Dental Practice; Dr. Abu Bakr, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) who has also developed a digital presence within the dental community through his online platform; and Dr. Haroon Shah, an implantologist and cosmetic dentist known for combining clinical dentistry with digital patient education.
The programme also featured Dr. Syeda Urooj, a dentist and digital content creator who has built a substantial online community while combining her professional career in dentistry with interests in lifestyle and fashion.
Another speaker, Dr. G.M. Paracha, is a dentist and public health professional who graduated in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2025 and was named Bloomberg Student of the Year 2025.
Their different professional backgrounds gave the session a broader perspective on how dental careers can develop beyond a conventional clinical pathway.
Five-minute talks put career journeys in focus
Rather than beginning with conventional lectures about digital dentistry, the session opened with a series of individual five-minute TED-style talks.
Each speaker used the short format to discuss their own professional journey — including how they began, challenges they encountered, decisions that influenced their careers and the process through which they established themselves within the dental community.
The emphasis was therefore not simply on professional achievements, but on the experiences and decisions behind them.
For students and young dentists, the format offered a perspective that conventional academic lectures often do not provide: an opportunity to hear directly how established professionals navigated uncertainty, built expertise and developed their professional identities.
From individual stories to an open conversation
The individual talks were followed by an interactive panel discussion featuring the invited speakers.
The audience was encouraged to participate, with students and young dentists asking questions directly about career development, postgraduate training, networking and building a professional identity.
The discussion also highlighted a recurring message shared across the speakers' different journeys: finding a niche, working consistently towards it, remaining humble and continuing to learn are important elements of long-term professional development.
Networking and collaboration emerged as equally important themes. The speakers encouraged young professionals to place themselves in environments where they can meet colleagues, develop relationships and discover opportunities.
Their careers had not necessarily followed linear paths, but perseverance, continuous learning and a willingness to pursue excellence remained common threads.
Digital platforms were another part of that journey. The visibility that the speakers had built within the dental community demonstrated how professional communication and digital engagement can increasingly complement clinical expertise.
Connecting students with the dental community
One of the summit's highlights was a dedicated meet-and-greet session, giving students and young dentists an opportunity to interact directly with the invited speakers.
The informal setting moved conversations beyond the conventional audience-and-speaker format and allowed participants to ask questions, seek advice and engage more personally with professionals they viewed as mentors and role models.
For early-career dentists, the interaction provided an opportunity to discuss professional aspirations and challenges in a less formal environment while developing connections within the wider dental community.
Recognising the team behind the summit
The summit concluded with the presentation of awards and certificates to organisers and members of the team whose collective efforts contributed to the event's execution.
The recognition acknowledged work that took place largely behind the scenes, from developing the concept and coordinating the programme to bringing speakers and participants together and managing the event itself.
For Dr. Ammar Abdullah and the organising team, the conclusion marked the completion of an idea that had moved from conception to execution.
More than a conversation about digital dentistry
The 1st Digital Dentists Summit 2026 ultimately extended beyond a discussion of social media or digital dentistry.
By bringing together student research, professional journeys, mentorship, networking and digital engagement, the summit created a broader conversation about how young dentists can build careers and professional identities in a rapidly changing dental profession.
The programme also highlighted a growing reality for dental professionals: clinical expertise remains central, but communication, collaboration, continuous learning and the ability to engage professionally beyond the clinic are becoming increasingly relevant to career development.
For students and young dentists entering the profession, the summit offered a message that went beyond any single presentation: finding one's direction may begin with an idea, but turning that idea into a meaningful career requires consistency, resilience, execution and the support of people willing to believe in the vision.
In that sense, the first Digital Dentists Summit was itself an example of the message it sought to convey — a vision is only the beginning; bringing it to life requires leadership, perseverance and a team willing to make it happen.
