KARACHI: What do a teacher's voice, oral hygiene and long-term health have in common? According to oral health experts, far more than many people realise.
That important message took centre stage at Bahria College Karsaz, where more than 250 teachers and faculty members, along with the Vice Principal and Section Heads, participated in a comprehensive Health & Wellness Grooming Lecture aimed at empowering educators with practical, evidence-based health knowledge that extends well beyond the classroom.
The session was delivered by Dr Hera Nadeem, Assistant Professor of Oral Pathology at Bhitai Dental and Medical College and Consultant Oral Surgeon, on the invitation of Principal Captain Imran Khan.
Rather than focusing only on treatment, the lecture explored how preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyle choices and greater awareness can help teachers protect one of their most valuable professional assets while also reducing future health risks.
The hidden connection between oral health and chronic diseases

One of the strongest messages from the session challenged a common misconception—that oral health begins and ends with the teeth.
Drawing on scientific evidence, Dr Hera Nadeem explained that poor oral hygiene has been linked with a number of systemic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic inflammatory disorders.
She emphasized that maintaining good oral hygiene, seeking timely dental examinations and detecting oral diseases at an early stage can contribute to reducing inflammation and supporting better overall health.
The discussion encouraged participants to view preventive dental care as an essential component of lifelong wellness rather than an occasional healthcare necessity.
Why every teacher should protect their voice

For educators, the voice is more than a means of communication—it is their most frequently used professional tool.
Recognising the physical demands placed on teachers throughout the academic day, Dr Hera Nadeem shared practical, evidence-based techniques to maintain vocal health and reduce unnecessary strain.
She advised teachers to remain adequately hydrated, perform simple voice-care exercises and avoid excessive vocal stress during prolonged teaching sessions.
The lecture also addressed one of the most common habits among educators: frequent consumption of tea and coffee. While these beverages can be enjoyed, she stressed that moderation is essential, explaining that excessive caffeine intake may contribute to vocal strain and affect long-term voice quality.
The practical recommendations resonated strongly with attendees because they could be incorporated into daily teaching routines immediately.
Healthy teachers inspire healthier students
The final segment expanded beyond oral and vocal health to address the broader foundations of physical wellbeing.
Dr Hera Nadeem highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, getting sufficient sleep, engaging in regular physical activity and practising good personal hygiene.
She also reminded participants that teachers play an influential role in shaping the attitudes and behaviours of future generations. By adopting healthier lifestyles themselves, educators set positive examples that can inspire students to make healthier choices throughout their lives.
The session reinforced the idea that investing in teachers' wellbeing ultimately benefits not only educators but also the learning environment they help create every day.
College appreciates commitment to community health
Concluding the programme, Principal Captain Imran Khan expressed his appreciation to Dr Hera Nadeem for sharing her expertise and acknowledged her continued commitment to promoting community health through education.
As a token of recognition, he presented her with a commemorative shield in appreciation of her valuable contribution.
The Health & Wellness Grooming Lecture concluded with positive feedback from participants, reflecting Bahria College Karsaz's commitment to fostering healthier workplaces and encouraging preventive healthcare awareness among educators.
