LARKANA: Oral cancer can present with clinical signs that require timely recognition, appropriate diagnostic evaluation and referral, making knowledge of its risk factors and early manifestations an important part of dental practice.

These issues came under detailed academic discussion at Bibi Aseefa Dental College (BADC), Larkana, where the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) organised a seminar titled “Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: From Risk Factors to Treatment.”

The seminar examined oral squamous cell carcinoma across the clinical pathway, covering risk factors, prevention, early recognition, diagnosis, staging, treatment modalities and follow-up.

The session brought together guest experts, faculty members, postgraduate residents, house officers and dental professionals, creating an academic forum focused on strengthening clinical understanding of one of the most important malignancies encountered in oral healthcare.

Oral cancer examined from risk to treatment

The seminar's central focus was not limited to the diagnosis of oral cancer. Participants were taken through multiple stages of the disease pathway, beginning with factors associated with its development and measures that can support prevention and early recognition.

The discussions also addressed early signs and symptoms, the importance of timely diagnosis, diagnostic approaches, staging and available treatment modalities, followed by considerations related to patient follow-up.

This broader clinical perspective highlighted the importance of recognising potentially concerning oral findings and ensuring that patients receive appropriate assessment and referral when necessary.

The seminar also emphasised the role of multidisciplinary management in oral cancer, reflecting the need for coordinated clinical care when managing patients with oral malignancies.

Guest experts discuss clinical recognition and management

The academic programme featured presentations by Dr. Abu Talib Noorani, Consultant at PEBS Hospital, Karachi, and Dr. Sharique Memon, Senior Registrar at LUMHS Thatta.

The guest speakers discussed important clinical aspects of oral cancer, including its risk factors, early signs and symptoms, timely diagnosis and appropriate referral.

Their presentations also addressed the broader management of oral malignancies and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

For dental professionals, such clinical discussions are particularly relevant because dentists can encounter suspicious oral changes during routine examinations, making familiarity with potential warning signs and appropriate referral pathways an important component of dental practice.

BADC faculty add to oral cancer discussion

The seminar also featured academic contributions from faculty members of Bibi Aseefa Dental College.

Professor Dr. Qaimuddin Shaikh, Dr. Aswad Ahmed, Dr. Asfar Hussain and Dr. Kinza Fatima shared their expertise and perspectives related to oral cancer and its management.

Their contributions complemented the presentations by the visiting speakers and expanded the academic discussion around the recognition, diagnosis and management of oral malignancies.

The interactive format gave participants an opportunity to strengthen their understanding of oral squamous cell carcinoma while engaging with different clinical perspectives on the disease.

More than 50 participants attend academic session

More than 50 participants, including postgraduate residents, house officers, faculty members and dental professionals, registered for and benefited from the academic session.

The participation reflected the seminar's focus on continuing professional and academic development, particularly in an area where early clinical recognition and timely referral can form an important part of patient care.

The session provided trainees and practising dental professionals with an opportunity to revisit the clinical pathway of oral cancer—from risk assessment and prevention to recognition, diagnosis, staging, treatment and follow-up.

BADC leadership stresses continued academic activities

At the conclusion of the seminar, Professor Dr. Qaimuddin Shaikh, Chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Bibi Aseefa Dental College, appreciated the participation and contributions of the guest speakers, faculty members, postgraduate trainees and house officers.

He emphasised the importance of continuing such academic activities for the professional development of dental healthcare professionals.

The closing proceedings were attended by Professor Dr. Nusrat Shah, Vice Chancellor, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU).

Professor Dr. Nusrat Shah appreciated the academic initiative and emphasised the importance of continuing such healthy academic activities.

She also distributed shields and certificates at the conclusion of the programme, recognising the participation and contributions associated with the seminar.

By bringing together oral and maxillofacial surgery expertise, dental faculty, trainees and practising professionals, the BADC seminar placed the full clinical spectrum of oral squamous cell carcinoma—from risk factors and early recognition to diagnosis, treatment and follow-up—at the centre of an academic discussion.
