LARKANA: Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has granted accreditation for the postgraduate MDS program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at Bibi Aseefa Dental College, marking a significant milestone for specialized dental education and surgical training in upper Sindh.

The approval represents the first-ever postgraduate MDS program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the institution and is expected to expand opportunities for advanced dental education, clinical training, and oral healthcare services within the region.

The initiative was led by Qaimuddin Shaikh, Principal of Bibi Aseefa Dental College and Chairperson of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, who played a central role in developing the academic, clinical, and training framework required for accreditation by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council.

A recognized supervisor for the MDS program, Prof. Dr. Qaimuddin Shaikh was instrumental in strengthening the department’s infrastructure, postgraduate training standards, and surgical education capabilities to meet PMDC requirements.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department is supported by a qualified academic and clinical faculty team, including Aswad, Associate Professor and holder of an MDS degree, and Asfar Hussain, Assistant Professor with FCPS qualification. Both faculty members are approved supervisors and actively contribute to postgraduate academic training and patient care services.

Institutional officials said the department is equipped with modern facilities, including a dedicated Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ward and a fully functional operation theatre designed to support advanced surgical procedures and specialist clinical training.

A wide range of procedures are routinely performed by the department, including the management of maxillofacial trauma, facial infections, oral pathology, reconstructive surgeries, and other complex facial surgical conditions.

The accreditation is being viewed as an important development for postgraduate dental education in Sindh, particularly for students and trainee dental surgeons from upper Sindh who previously had limited access to specialty training opportunities within the region.

Medical education experts note that the expansion of accredited postgraduate programs in oral and maxillofacial surgery is increasingly important as Pakistan faces growing demand for specialized dental and facial surgical care, trauma management, and advanced oral healthcare services.

The approval also reflects broader efforts by medical and dental institutions across Pakistan to strengthen specialty education, improve surgical training standards, and enhance regional access to advanced healthcare education outside major metropolitan centers.

Officials at Bibi Aseefa Dental College said the newly accredited program is expected to contribute to the development of highly trained oral and maxillofacial surgeons while simultaneously improving specialized patient care services in Larkana and surrounding areas.

The accreditation further reinforces the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, clinical innovation, postgraduate education, and the advancement of specialized dental healthcare in Pakistan.
