Hands-on orthodontics workshop at IADSR enhances clinical skills of dental professionals
LAHORE: A one-day hands-on orthodontics workshop was recently held at the Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR), as part of the 19th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD) program. The session was conducted by Dr Rashid Mehmood, BDS, MFDS (RCPSG), M Orth, F Orth (RCS Ed), U.K, an experienced orthodontist with extensive international credentials.
The workshop offered participants a comprehensive overview of orthodontic disciplines — preventive, interceptive, corrective, and surgical orthodontics — highlighting both theoretical understanding and practical application.
Key focus areas of the workshop
Dr Rashid Mehmood elaborated on early diagnosis of malocclusions, space maintenance techniques, and serial extraction approaches, referencing Dewel’s and Tweed’s methods. He emphasized the importance of timely intervention in achieving functional and esthetic balance in developing dentitions.
Participants also gained exposure to orthodontic esthetic assessment principles at three critical levels:
- Macro-esthetics: Facial symmetry, vertical proportions, and skeletal harmony.
- Mini-esthetics: Tooth-lip relationships, smile design, and arch form.
- Micro-esthetics: Tooth size, morphology, gingival contours, and golden proportion analysis.
- Clinical focus: Class II malocclusion and bonding protocols
The session included a detailed discussion on Class II malocclusion—its diagnosis and diverse treatment options such as growth modification, orthodontic camouflage, and surgical correction. Functional appliances like twin block and headgear were explained with clinical indications and timing of use.
The workshop concluded with a live demonstration of the bonding procedure in orthodontics, covering enamel pre-treatment, etching, sealant application, and surface-specific bonding techniques.
Empowering general dentists with orthodontic expertise
The workshop successfully met its objective of enhancing the orthodontic competency of general dentists, equipping them with essential skills for better diagnosis and management of malocclusion cases in general practice.
The IADSR Orthodontics Workshop 2025 reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to advanced dental education, evidence-based learning, and clinical excellence through immersive training experiences.
