LCMD hosts IMECON 2026 pre-conference workshop on simulation-based education

KARACHI: The Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry (LCMD) successfully hosted the Pre-Conference Inaugural Workshop of IMECON 2026, focusing on Simulation-Based Education for Health Professions Educators, reinforcing its commitment to advancing medical education and faculty development in Pakistan.

Structured, immersive learning experience

The pre-conference workshop provided a well-structured and immersive learning platform that integrated theory with practice to enhance the teaching competencies of health professions educators. The initiative was led by Prof. Dr. Navid Rashid Qureshi, Chief Organizer of the workshop, whose academic leadership and vision emphasized excellence in health professions education.

Foundations of simulation-based education

The workshop formally began with Prof. Dr. Tahera Ayub, who introduced participants to the core concepts of simulation-based education, including its different types and levels of fidelity. She highlighted the educational advantages of simulation, its evidence-based role in improving learning outcomes, and its growing importance in promoting patient safety.

Her session underscored how simulation bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world clinical practice by allowing learners to develop skills in a controlled and risk-free environment.

Practical implementation in medical, dental education

Building on this foundation, Prof. Dr. Naheed Najmi guided participants through the practical aspects of conducting simulation-based education. Her session focused on how to plan, organize, and implement simulation activities effectively in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching settings.

She emphasized the essential components required to run meaningful simulation sessions, including scenario design, learner engagement, and structured debriefing, ensuring that simulation activities translate into measurable educational impact.

Hands-on learning through scenario development

The workshop concluded with an interactive, hands-on session facilitated by Dr. Sabaa Shahid, during which participants actively engaged in small-group activities. Using a structured template, participants developed simulation-based clinical scenarios tailored to topics of their own interest.

This collaborative exercise enabled participants to apply newly acquired knowledge, enhance critical thinking, and gain practical experience in designing simulation-based learning activities suitable for diverse teaching environments.

Strengthening health professions education through innovation

The IMECON 2026 pre-conference workshop reflected a growing emphasis on innovative teaching strategies in medical and dental education. By combining conceptual understanding with practical application, the workshop equipped educators with tools to improve learner engagement, strengthen clinical competence, and ultimately contribute to safer patient care.

The initiative aligns with IMECON’s broader mission to promote educational excellence, collaboration, and innovation across health professions education in Pakistan and beyond.
