LUMHS's pre-conference workshop elevates skills in distraction osteogenesis
JAMSHORO: The Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, successfully conducted a Pre-Conference Workshop on "Distraction Osteogenesis" recently. The workshop, part of the 6th International Dental Conference, provided a hands-on learning experience for junior fellows and residents of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), focusing on modern surgical techniques and practical skill development in the field of distraction osteogenesis.
Enhancing understanding of distraction osteogenesis techniques
The workshop aimed to deepen participants' understanding of distraction osteogenesis, with a focus on its principles, techniques, and clinical applications. It included model surgeries and practical exercises on anatomical models, where participants were introduced to osteotomy design, proper placement of distraction devices, and activation and stabilization techniques. The session also emphasized preventing nerve injury, a critical component of successful surgery.

Interactive learning with renowned experts
Facilitating the workshop were esteemed experts in the field, including Prof. Dr. Syed Gulzar Ali Bukhari, Principal and Dean of Postgraduate Studies Dentistry at Watim Dental College, Rawalpindi/Islamabad, and Prof. Dr. Noor-ul-Wahab, Consultant OMFS at Ziauddin Hospital, Karachi. Their extensive clinical experience, coupled with their interactive teaching approach, provided invaluable insights into the complexities of distraction osteogenesis.
Addressing complications and patient outcomes
A key part of the workshop focused on the recognition and management of complications, both intraoperative and post-operative. Participants were taught how to recognize early and late-stage complications and implement preventive strategies and corrective measures to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
