KUALA LUMPUR: Pakistani dental professional Dr Sadia Saif has completed advanced training in Digital Smile Design (DSD) with internationally renowned dentist Dr Christian Coachman in Malaysia, adding another international learning milestone to her professional journey.
The four-day programme, titled Advanced Smile Design with Dr Christian Coachman, was organised by The Dental Academy Malaysia from October 27 to 30, 2026. It brought participants together for intensive instruction in advanced aesthetic diagnosis, digital smile planning, restorative treatment strategies and practical clinical applications.
Announcing her achievement, Dr Saif described the opportunity to train directly with Dr Coachman, the pioneer of Digital Smile Design, as a proud professional milestone. She also expressed her ambition to bring advanced smile-design expertise to Pakistan and represent the country at international dental forums.
The training carries particular significance because Dr Coachman is credited with developing the Digital Smile Design methodology, which has helped introduce a more systematic, facially guided and digitally integrated approach to aesthetic dental treatment planning.
Learning from the pioneer of Digital Smile Design
Dr Christian Coachman is a Brazilian dentist and dental technician internationally recognised for pioneering the Digital Smile Design methodology and founding the Digital Smile Design organisation.
He graduated in dental technology in 1995 and dentistry in 2002 from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. His professional background combines clinical dentistry, dental technology, aesthetic rehabilitation and digital treatment planning.
Dr Coachman is the founder and president of the board of Digital Smile Design and director of its DSD Residency programme. He has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and has lectured internationally on aesthetic and digital dentistry, dental photography, oral rehabilitation, dental ceramics and implant dentistry.
His approach brings together facial analysis, dental proportions, digital photography, video documentation and treatment simulation to help clinicians develop and communicate proposed smile transformations.
Through DSD, dentists can assess how teeth, gums, lips and facial features interact when a patient smiles, allowing aesthetic treatment planning to consider the overall facial appearance rather than individual teeth in isolation.
What Dr Saif learned during the advanced training
The programme at The Dental Academy Malaysia was designed around advanced two-dimensional and three-dimensional smile-design concepts, combining structured instruction with practical exercises.
Its curriculum covered dento-facial guidelines, smile-frame analysis, dento-gingival principles, restorative quality control and improved communication between dentists and dental laboratories.
Participants also explored ways to manage aesthetic and restorative compromises, including correcting tooth proportions, improving the appearance of bulky or artificial-looking restorations, addressing interproximal areas and planning artificial gingival structures.
An important component involved practical demonstrations and exercises using digital planning tools, including Exocad, alongside hands-on model work.
The course also addressed the importance of visual communication and quality management in restorative dentistry, helping clinicians assess proposed designs, communicate precise instructions to dental laboratories and evaluate the quality of restorations before and during treatment.
These skills are particularly relevant to complex aesthetic cases, where successful treatment requires coordination between clinical diagnosis, restorative planning, laboratory work and the patient's expectations.
Why Digital Smile Design matters in modern dentistry
Digital Smile Design is more than a cosmetic visualisation tool. It provides a structured approach to aesthetic diagnosis, interdisciplinary communication and restorative treatment planning.
Using digital photographs, videos and simulation tools, dentists can evaluate the relationship between a patient's facial characteristics and dental appearance, develop proposed treatment designs and communicate those possibilities more effectively.
The approach can support treatment planning involving restorative dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics and implant dentistry, particularly when several disciplines need to work together to achieve a coordinated outcome.
It also allows patients to better understand proposed treatment options before clinical procedures begin.
However, a digital smile simulation is not a guarantee of the final clinical result. Treatment decisions must still be guided by a comprehensive examination, functional requirements, biological considerations and individual patient needs.
As digital workflows become increasingly integrated into contemporary dental practice, training in these methods can help clinicians improve treatment communication, planning and quality assessment.
Another international milestone in Dr Saif's professional journey
Dr Saif's latest training follows a series of international professional development and recognition milestones.
In July 2024, she completed a two-day training and certification programme in Full Mouth Reconstruction organised by The Dental Academy Malaysia under the direction of Dr Lukas Lassmann. Dental News Pakistan reported at the time that she was the second Pakistani professional to achieve the distinction.
Her international recognition continued in November 2025, when she secured first place in the orthodontics category for children and teenagers at the inaugural ASEAN Dentistry Awards in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The competition featured more than 350 categories and participants from 22 countries. In addition to her first-place achievement, Dr Saif secured runner-up positions in eight other competitive categories, including aligner cases, implant dentistry, digital implantology and multidisciplinary digital workflows.
Taking advanced dental knowledge back to Pakistan
For Pakistani dental professionals, international training opportunities offer exposure to evolving clinical concepts, digital technologies and treatment-planning approaches that can contribute to the development of contemporary dental practice.
Dr Saif has expressed her intention to bring the knowledge and experience gained through the advanced smile-design programme to Pakistan and share her learning with the local dental community.
Her latest achievement adds to her growing record of international training and professional recognition, while highlighting the increasing importance of digital workflows and aesthetic treatment planning in modern dentistry.
As the profession continues to evolve, the ability to combine sound clinical judgement with digital tools, interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centred communication remains central to delivering predictable and responsible dental care.
