Empowering dental educators: LCMD conducts workshop on AI in teaching and research
KARACHI: In an era of rapidly advancing technology, Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry (LCMD) is leading the way in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into medical and dental education. The Continuous Dental Education Committee (CDEC) at LCMD recently hosted a hands-on workshop titled "AI in Action: Enhance Your Teaching and Research", designed to equip faculty members, postgraduate trainees, and house officers with practical AI tools to enhance their academic workflows.
A strong turnout, enthusiastic participation
The workshop saw over 25 participants, including senior faculty members, postgraduate trainees, and house officers, all eager to integrate AI into their teaching and research practices. With AI playing an increasingly vital role in education and healthcare, the session was an exciting opportunity to empower attendees with cutting-edge skills.
Exploring specialized AI platforms for education, research
The workshop delved into a variety of specialized AI platforms aimed at streamlining medical and dental education, helping educators and researchers work more efficiently:
- Teaching & writing: Participants practiced creating 5-minute lectures and generating high-quality multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in seconds using ChatGPT and Gemini, demonstrating AI’s potential to enhance the teaching process.
- Literature & evidence: The session explored platforms like Semantic Scholar and Elicit, which allow users to quickly find and summarize evidence-based articles, saving precious research time.
- Research mapping: Attendees learned to use Research Rabbit for mapping related research papers and NanoBanana for concise literature summarization, streamlining their research process.
- Planning & capture: A demonstration of Otter.ai for lecture transcription and Notion AI for structured lesson planning showed how AI tools can optimize lesson organization and accessibility.
- Data exploration: The session included a special segment on NotebookLM, which demonstrated how to analyze complex research trends and generate visual charts more efficiently.
Expert facilitation, support
The session was expertly facilitated by Dr. Muhammad Junaid (BDS, MHPE) and Dr. Zubia Waqar (BDS, MSc Public Health, MHPE, PhD Scholar) from The Indus Hospital/University Medical Education Department, who guided participants through each AI tool, ensuring they understood the practical applications in academic settings.
The workshop was moderated by Prof. Dr. Uzma Zareef, Head of Oral Pathology and Chairperson of CDEC at LCMD, alongside Dr. Anjum Fahad, Head of Community Dentistry at LCMD. Their leadership created a collaborative atmosphere that encouraged active participation and knowledge sharing.

The workshop concluded with the presentation of Tokens of Appreciation to the facilitators as a gesture of gratitude for their invaluable contributions to the academic community.
