LCMD celebrates World Diabetes Day with integrated academic activity
KARACHI: The Dental Outreach Department, in collaboration with the Department of Health Professions Education (DHPE) at Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry (LCMD), conducted a first-of-its-kind integrated academic activity on World Diabetes Day, 14th November 2025, focusing on “Diabetes & Oral Health.”
This innovative initiative aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, reflecting strong academic collaboration and interdisciplinary learning at LCMD.
Holistic student engagement through teamwork, critical thinking
To build a comprehensive understanding of the connection between diabetes and oral health, third-year dental students were provided with a pre-reading package collaboratively designed by all basic and clinical dental departments. Students were divided into small groups, each guided by faculty mentors and supported by Teacher Assistants, to engage in in-depth discussions and identify cross-disciplinary links.
On the day of the event, each group was presented with a diabetes-related clinical case containing integrated questions from every dental subject. With no gadgets or external resources allowed, students relied solely on teamwork, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and pre-event preparation, making it a highly interactive and intellectually stimulating experience.
Team-teaching approach enhances interdepartmental coordination
A key highlight of the activity was the team-teaching approach, where faculty jointly designed and delivered the integrated lesson plan, demonstrating seamless interdepartmental collaboration. Facilitators and student team leads ensured smooth group dynamics, effective communication, and meaningful academic exchanges throughout the session.
The activity concluded with a dynamic panel discussion and the announcement of the top-performing student team, recognizing excellence in reasoning, collaboration, and clinical application.
