LCMD's College of Dentistry launches AI facilitation cell to redefine dental education in Pakistan

KARACHI: In a bold move that signals a paradigm shift in dental education, the College of Dentistry at Liaquat College of Medicine & Dentistry has officially launched its AI Facilitation Cell (AIFC), positioning itself as a national leader in intelligent academic reform. At a time when artificial intelligence is transforming industries worldwide, this initiative marks a decisive step toward modernizing healthcare education in Pakistan.

The AI Facilitation Cell has been launched under the visionary leadership of Prof. Dr. Navid Rashid Qureshi, Principal, College of Dentistry, LCMD. The initiative has been spearheaded by Dr. Rizwan Hassan, Assistant Manager, Dental Outreach Department, and Dr. Amna Afridi, Focal Person, AIFC. Together, they have laid the foundation for a structured, ethical, and curriculum-aligned integration of artificial intelligence into academic practice.

Unlike conventional digital adoption, the AI Facilitation Cell is not about replacing educators with machines. It is about redefining how dental education is designed, delivered, and experienced. The Cell embeds artificial intelligence into lesson planning, academic structuring, and presentation development, ensuring that technology enhances faculty expertise rather than diminishes it.

A central pillar of this transformation is the structured use of NotebookLM for source-based, evidence-grounded academic content development. This ensures that teaching materials remain scientifically sound, curriculum-compliant, and academically rigorous. Complementing this approach is the use of Canva AI, which is being employed to convert routine lectures into visually engaging, high-impact learning experiences. The workflow enables faculty members to align learning objectives with curriculum standards while improving clarity, consistency, and student engagement.

The scope of the AI Facilitation Cell goes beyond content creation. The Cell is actively exploring chatbot integration models within academic departments. These AI-powered academic support assistants are envisioned to handle frequently asked questions, provide structured student guidance, reinforce revision, and clarify key concepts. Importantly, these systems will operate under faculty supervision, ensuring curriculum alignment, academic integrity, and ethical safeguards.

Capacity building stands at the heart of this initiative. Faculty development sessions, hands-on workshops, guided AI workflows, and structured digital literacy training are being rolled out to ensure educators gain practical competence and confidence in using artificial intelligence. The goal is not isolated experimentation but institutional readiness, where the entire academic ecosystem evolves together.

The AI Facilitation Cell also promotes a culture of ownership and collaborative innovation. Educators who demonstrate curiosity, intellectual energy, and a commitment to growth are being invited to contribute, lead, and co-create new academic models. This approach nurtures leadership in digital transformation and strengthens the institution’s long-term strategic vision.

With this launch, the College of Dentistry places itself at the forefront of intelligent academic reform in Pakistan. It reflects a future where technology, pedagogy, and professional excellence converge to produce better-prepared graduates and stronger healthcare education systems.

The transformation is deliberate. The direction is clear. The future of dental education in Pakistan is intelligent.
