World Diabetes Day 2025: LCMD to hold teacher assistant-led learning on diabetes and dental treatment

KARACHI: The Liaquat College of Medicine and Dentistry (LCMD) will mark World Diabetes Day 2025 with a student-centred academic initiative titled “Teacher Assistant Led Learning: Diabetes and Dental Treatment — From Basic Knowledge to Clinical Implications.” The event is scheduled for 14 November 2025 at 09:30 AM in the college auditorium (6th floor) and targets 3rd and final year BDS students.

Organised by the Dental Outreach Department, LCMD, in collaboration with the Department of Health Professions Education (DHPE), the session will use case-based, team-led activities to translate foundational knowledge about diabetes into practical dental management strategies. The teacher assistant model places senior students in facilitator roles, strengthening peer learning, clinical reasoning, and communication skills essential for patient-centred dental care.

The programme will cover how diabetes influences oral disease risk, wound healing, periodontal management, chairside screening, and treatment planning for medically complex patients. It will also emphasise prevention, interprofessional collaboration, and practical steps dental teams can take to improve outcomes for people living with diabetes.

Speakers and facilitators will guide participants through real clinical scenarios so students can practise risk assessment, modify treatment plans safely, and understand when to refer patients for medical management. The initiative explicitly supports LCMD’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — notably SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) — by linking health education, prevention and community impact.

LCMD officials noted that this World Diabetes Day activity seeks to create a generation of dental professionals who are clinically competent and socially responsible, able to integrate oral health with broader systemic care for patients with diabetes. The college encourages participation from all eligible students and faculty involved in undergraduate clinical teaching.
