Digital dentistry enables 2,000 advanced procedures in remote Amazon communities
RONDONIA, BRAZIL: In a groundbreaking week-long expedition, 2,000 complex dental procedures were recently successfully completed in the remote Amazonian municipality of Rolim de Moura do Guaporé, thanks to the power of digital dentistry.

The initiative was led by Dentsply Sirona, a global leader in dental technology based in North Carolina, in collaboration with Project 32, a Brazilian nonprofit founded by Dr. Manoel Eduardo de Lima Machado. Together, they brought cutting-edge oral health treatments to communities with limited access to dental care, using intraoral scanning, cloud-based diagnostics, and same-day prosthetics.
“By using advanced techniques and high-performance technologies, we’re able to deliver exceptional care that is efficient for everyone involved,” said Dr. Machado. “This is the kind of dentistry that should be accessible to all, whether in public or private healthcare systems.”
Remote support, real-time care
The expedition's innovation lay not just in its equipment, but in its delivery model. Of the 20 dentists involved, 10 participated remotely through DS Core, Dentsply Sirona’s cloud-based platform. Using real-time intraoral scans, they provided diagnoses and treatment recommendations from their clinics, eliminating the need to travel and minimizing environmental impact.
According to Andrea Frohning, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Dentsply Sirona:
“This expedition is a powerful example of how digital technologies are advancing care in underserved areas while expanding global access to oral health.”
Impact and global vision
- 2,000+ procedures performed in 7 days
- 55,000+ residents in the targeted Amazon region
- 30,000+ advanced dental procedures completed since 2013 through Dentsply Sirona and
- Project 32’s ongoing collaboration
- Goal: 25 million healthy smiles worldwide by 2025
The initiative supports Dentsply Sirona’s broader mission of transforming oral health care through innovation and aligns with global healthcare equity goals.
The future of digital dentistry
As technology becomes more integrated into dental practice, the digital dentistry market is set to grow rapidly, projected to reach US$17.2 billion by 2032, with a compound annual growth rate of 10.6% from 2024 to 2032, according to SNS Insider.
The expedition demonstrates how tele-dentistry, 3D scanning, and real-time collaboration can not only overcome geographic barriers but redefine care delivery for millions.
