Dentsply Sirona, FDI and Smile Train expand access to digital cleft care education
CHARLOTTE, N.C.: In recognition of Cleft Awareness Month, Dentsply Sirona, the FDI World Dental Federation (FDI), and Smile Train are expanding global access to high-quality digital cleft care education. The initiative aims to provide dental professionals with advanced tools, multilingual training, and interactive resources to improve outcomes for children born with cleft lip and palate worldwide.
The initiative reflects Dentsply Sirona’s sustainability strategy, “BEYOND: Taking Action for a Brighter World,” and builds on a strong partnership with FDI and Smile Train to support underserved communities.
Why digital cleft care matters
Cleft lip and palate affect thousands of children every year, limiting their ability to eat, speak, breathe, and thrive. Comprehensive cleft care—including timely, high-quality dental care—is critical for improving health, confidence, and overall quality of life.
“Once you have witnessed the life-changing effect of high-quality cleft care delivered by a specially trained dental professional, you want everyone in need to have access to this,” said Marion Par-Weixlberger, VP Corporate Communications, PR and Brand at Dentsply Sirona.
Expanding digital education with MOOCs
To increase accessibility, the partners have expanded their Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Digital Dentistry in Cleft Care.” Originally available in English, the course is now also offered in Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
The MOOC equips dental professionals with cleft care protocols using presentations, quizzes, short videos, and interactive discussions — making it both practical and engaging for learners.
New workflow videos and interactive tools
In addition to the expanded MOOC, the partners launched two Digital Cleft Care Workflow videos. Filmed with real patients at the Smile Train regional Cleft Leadership Center, Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation Philippines Inc., the videos provide practical insights into:
- Pre-surgical cleft care
- Mixed dentition management
Both resources are available on the FDI website and are designed to help dentists navigate complex cases with confidence.
An interactive tool hosted on the FDI website further supports dental professionals, offering easy navigation through the cleft care protocols and related materials.
Global voices on collaboration
“Thanks to cutting-edge technology and cleft care protocols, we have the tools and the guidance to ensure patients receive the best possible care. Now we must make sure professionals everywhere have access to this training,” said Dr. Greg Chadwick, President of FDI World Dental Federation.
“At Smile Train, we know that empowering local providers with tools, training, and technology transforms entire communities,” added Susannah Schaefer, President and CEO of Smile Train. “Expanding access to digital cleft care education ensures more children with clefts can live full, confident lives.”
Takeaway
The collaboration between Dentsply Sirona, FDI, and Smile Train marks a major step toward reducing healthcare inequities and strengthening cleft care worldwide. By combining expertise, technology, and education, the partners are investing in healthier, happier futures for children born with cleft conditions.
