JMDC conducts oral health awareness camp at Indus Hospital’s pediatric oncology unit

KARACHI: The recent oral health awareness camp at Indus Hospital, organized by the Department of Periodontology at Jinnah Medical & Dental College (JMDC), brought meaningful support to one of the most vulnerable patient groups—children undergoing cancer treatment. The initiative was led by Dr Ujala Faisal, Head of Department, accompanied by Dr Aisha, Dr Rumaisa, and Mr Mujtaba, who together delivered an interactive and compassionate session tailored for pediatric oncology patients.

Using a child-friendly approach, the team engaged young patients through presentations and dental model demonstrations. They highlighted essential topics such as the importance of daily oral hygiene, common oral complications linked to cancer therapies, and simple preventive measures that help reduce discomfort and infection risk. The session also involved parents and guardians to ensure continuity of care at home.

Recognizing the importance of interprofessional collaboration, the JMDC team also conducted a dedicated training session for the oncology nursing staff. The session focused on identifying oral health issues during treatment, supporting patient education, and incorporating preventive oral care into daily routines.

Appreciation from Indus Hospital leadership

The administration of Indus Hospital expressed warm appreciation for Dr Ujala Faisal and her team, acknowledging their commitment, professionalism and contribution to improving the overall well-being of pediatric oncology patients. The collaborative effort was widely recognized as a valuable step toward strengthening oral health awareness and enhancing multidisciplinary care.

The awareness camp reinforced the importance of preventing oral complications during cancer treatment and showcased JMDC’s continued dedication to community service and evidence-based patient education.
