JMDC leads national push for preventive dentistry and healthy aging
KARACHI: Pakistan is facing a silent health challenge as its elderly population grows rapidly while access to preventive care remains limited. According to global public health research, poor oral health in older adults is strongly linked to heart disease, diabetes complications, malnutrition, and declining quality of life. In low- and middle-income countries, preventable dental conditions remain among the most neglected aspects of aging healthcare, despite being one of the easiest to address through education and early screening.
Against this national backdrop, the Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) has taken a practical step toward redefining elderly healthcare through preventive dentistry. The Community Dentistry team of JMDC conducted an oral health awareness session and free dental check-up camp at Sahara Old Age Home, placing oral hygiene at the center of healthy aging.

The activity was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Haider, assistant professor and head of the department of community dentistry at JMDC. The outreach team included demonstrators Dr. Arish Sohail, Dr. Aimen Imran, and Dr. Tazeen, along with house officers Dr. Sejal and Dr. Tooba, supported by one staff member.
During the visit, approximately 80 to 85 elderly residents were examined for common oral health problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, and ill-fitting dentures. The team also conducted interactive demonstrations of correct tooth-brushing techniques using dental models, allowing residents to visually understand proper daily oral care practices.

To support long-term behavior change, toothbrushes and toothpaste samples were distributed among the residents, reinforcing the importance of routine oral hygiene as part of everyday health maintenance. The session emphasized that preventive dental care can reduce infections, improve nutrition, and enhance overall well-being among older adults.
The management of Sahara Old Age Home expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting its value in addressing an often-overlooked health need among elderly residents. The outreach program was described as both educational and empowering, helping residents understand that oral health is not a luxury but a necessity for healthy aging.
Public health experts increasingly view preventive dentistry as a critical pillar of future healthcare systems, particularly in countries like Pakistan where curative treatment often comes too late. By focusing on awareness and early screening rather than emergency care alone, such initiatives reduce long-term healthcare costs and improve patient outcomes.
JMDC’s outreach reflects a broader national shift toward integrating dentistry into mainstream public health policy. Through faculty-led community programs and student participation, the institution is contributing to a model of care that connects education, prevention, and social responsibility.
As Pakistan prepares for an aging population, programs like this highlight how small interventions can deliver large public health benefits. Preventive dentistry is emerging not only as a clinical discipline but as a strategy for dignified, healthier aging across the country.
