Leadership, Governance, and Strategic Management in Medical Education: CPSP Pre-Conference Workshop at HITEC-IMS
TAXILA: A pre-conference workshop on Leadership, Governance, and Strategic Management in Medical Education was successfully conducted recently at the Dental College, HITEC Institute of Medical Sciences (HITEC-IMS). This workshop, organized as part of preparations for IMECON 2026, aimed to strengthen faculty knowledge and skills ahead of the flagship medical education conference organized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).
The workshop focused on enhancing understanding of leadership concepts, governance structures, and strategic management practices within medical and dental education institutions. Designed to be highly interactive and practice-oriented, the sessions encouraged participants to engage with real-world challenges and develop actionable strategies for academic leadership.
Foundational insights on leadership, governance
The workshop began with an insightful session by Brigadier Javed Hashmi, Director of HITEC-IMS Medical College, who provided a strong conceptual foundation on leadership and governance in medical education. His session emphasized the role of visionary leadership in shaping institutional success.
This was followed by remarks from Dr. Irfan Shah, Principal of Dental College, HITEC-IMS, who highlighted the critical importance of effective leadership in academic institutions to improve teaching quality, student outcomes, and overall institutional performance.
Strategic thinking, leadership practices
A keynote session by Brigadier Dr. Nadir Sulaiman from the National Defence University (NDU) offered perspectives on strategic thinking, leadership styles, and decision-making frameworks. Participants appreciated the practical examples shared and learned how to apply these strategies in medical and dental colleges.
Interactive discussions on leadership challenges
The workshop further included an interactive session by Dr. Turab Fatima, encouraging participants to reflect on leadership challenges and engage in group discussions. Dr. Ayesha Saeed also led a session on leadership styles, fostering active participation and providing tools to implement these styles effectively in academic settings.
Hands-on activities, medical leadership competency framework
The concluding session, conducted by Dr. Fatima Rizwan, introduced the Medical Leadership Competency Framework (MLCF). Participants engaged in practical exercises, including leadership hat activity, role plays, and clarity challenges, designed to enhance leadership skills and promote strategic thinking among faculty members.
Outcome and feedback
The pre-conference workshop received highly positive feedback from faculty participants, who reported increased understanding of leadership concepts, governance, and strategic management. Organizers emphasized that such workshops strengthen professional development and prepare educators to implement effective leadership practices in medical and dental institutions.
