HYDERABAD: Continuing professional education remains a cornerstone of modern dental practice, particularly in surgical disciplines where clinical judgment, technical precision, and evidence-based decision-making directly influence patient outcomes. Recognizing this need, BMK Dental and Maxillofacial Clinic, Hyderabad, organized a one-day hands-on workshop on impacted teeth, bringing together dental professionals for advanced training in diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical management, and complication prevention.
The workshop, titled “One-Day Hands-on Workshop on Impacted Teeth: Clinical Considerations, Case Discussions, and Surgical Management,” was held recently under the supervision of Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Vishal Lohana.
Designed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and real-world clinical practice, the educational activity focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of impacted teeth and improving their confidence in managing surgically challenging cases.
Impacted teeth—particularly impacted third molars or wisdom teeth—remain among the most common conditions encountered in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Proper diagnosis, radiographic assessment, treatment planning, and surgical execution are essential to achieving successful outcomes while minimizing complications.
Throughout the workshop, participants received detailed instruction on the classification and diagnosis of impacted teeth, radiographic evaluation techniques, surgical anatomy, and critical preoperative considerations that influence treatment planning.
The academic component was complemented by practical training sessions that allowed participants to develop and refine surgical skills under expert guidance.
Key clinical topics covered during the workshop included flap design and soft tissue management, bone guttering techniques, tooth sectioning procedures, management of retained root fragments, suturing methods, wound closure principles, and strategies for handling both intraoperative and postoperative complications.
The hands-on component provided participants with direct exposure to surgical techniques commonly used in the management of impacted teeth. Training exercises focused on flap reflection, tissue handling, bone removal procedures, tooth sectioning approaches, suturing techniques, and clinical management protocols aimed at reducing surgical risks and improving patient recovery.
In addition to technical training, the workshop featured multiple case-based discussions designed to encourage evidence-based clinical decision-making.
Participants reviewed real-world clinical scenarios involving diagnosis, treatment planning, difficult impactions, surgical approach selection, and complication management. These discussions enabled attendees to analyze treatment options critically while strengthening their problem-solving skills in oral surgery practice.
Speaking about the objectives of the workshop, organizer and trainer Dr. Vishal Lohana emphasized the importance of practical learning in surgical dentistry.
“This workshop was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice by providing participants with practical insights and hands-on experience in the management of impacted teeth. Our aim was to equip dental professionals with the confidence and skills required to manage such cases effectively in routine practice,” he said.
The workshop concluded with positive feedback from participants, who highlighted the value of combining academic discussion with supervised practical training.
Organizers noted that continuing dental education programs focused on surgical skill development are essential for helping clinicians remain updated with current techniques, improve treatment outcomes, and enhance patient safety.
