LAHORE: In modern dental practice, clinical confidence often comes down to one thing — hands-on surgical competence.

While theoretical knowledge builds the foundation, it is the ability to perform procedures like suturing, incision design, and wound management that defines real-world readiness.

It is this critical gap that a recent workshop aimed to address.

Intensive surgical training at IADSR

The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) recently conducted a hands-on workshop on Oral Surgical Skills as part of its 20th Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD).

The session was led by Prof. Dr. Hafiz Shaker Mehmood, BDS, MCPS (Oral Surgery), MDS (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery), a respected oral and maxillofacial surgeon and academic trainer.

From theory to precision: suturing under expert guidance

The workshop began with detailed demonstrations of suturing techniques, where participants were introduced to:

  • Principles of wound closure
  • Proper needle handling techniques
  • Selection of appropriate suture materials

Prof. Shaker emphasized precision, tissue respect, and clinical decision-making — key elements often underestimated in routine dental practice.

Participants then practiced multiple suturing methods, gradually building control, accuracy, and surgical confidence.

Realistic simulation: learning beyond textbooks

A key highlight of the training was practical surgical simulation on goat heads, providing a realistic environment for skill application.

This hands-on component allowed participants to practice:

  • Soft tissue handling
  • Incision planning and execution
  • Wound closure techniques
  • Basic oral surgical procedures

The simulation closely replicated real clinical conditions, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and patient care.

Interactive learning, clinical problem-solving

The session was highly interactive, encouraging participants to actively engage in discussion.

Prof. Shaker addressed common challenges faced in oral surgery, offering practical solutions drawn from clinical experience.

This approach helped participants not only learn techniques but also understand how to respond to real-life surgical complications.

Building confidence for everyday dental practice

By the end of the workshop, participants reported a marked improvement in their understanding of oral surgical principles.

More importantly, they gained the confidence to apply these skills in routine clinical settings, strengthening their readiness for independent practice.

The session concluded with strong positive feedback, highlighting its relevance in modern dental education.
