HYDERABAD: Ramadan is a time of compassion, reflection, and generosity—but for a group of passionate dental students in Hyderabad, it also became an opportunity to address a largely ignored public health issue: children’s oral health.
In a heartfelt community outreach initiative, SYNCH BDMC, the Bhitai Dental & Medical College chapter of SYNCH (Solidarity Among Young Nation for Change)—a nationwide student-led welfare network active across medical and dental institutions—organized a free dental camp alongside Iftari and Eidi distribution at SOS Village Hyderabad.
The initiative combined healthcare service with the spirit of Ramadan, bringing oral health awareness, preventive dental care, and celebration to children who rarely receive such opportunities.
By the end of the event, more than 150 children and residents had benefited, proving that student-led initiatives can play a powerful role in bridging healthcare gaps in underserved communities.
Student volunteers leading change beyond the classroom
The outreach was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Zeenat Zulfiqar, President of SYNCH BDMC, and Vice President Hira Karim, with the dedicated coordination of Zehra Shah, Head of Social Welfare.
Supported by an enthusiastic team of student volunteers, the group transformed the day into a community-focused dental awareness campaign.
During the dental camp, volunteers provided:
- Free oral health checkups
- Basic dental consultations
- Oral hygiene education sessions
- Demonstrations on proper toothbrushing techniques
- Guidance on healthy dietary habits to prevent dental diseases
For many of the children at SOS Village, it was their first exposure to structured oral hygiene education, helping them understand how small daily habits can protect them from cavities, gum disease, and other preventable dental problems.
A collaborative push for better oral hygiene awareness
The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Colgate, which supported the outreach by promoting oral hygiene awareness among children.
Through interactive demonstrations and educational guidance, volunteers emphasized how regular brushing, proper technique, and balanced dietary choices can significantly reduce the risk of dental disease.
Preventive dental education remains one of the most effective ways to combat oral health problems—yet awareness remains limited in many communities across Pakistan.
Student-driven outreach efforts such as this one demonstrate how future healthcare professionals can help close this awareness gap even before entering professional practice.
Sharing the spirit of Ramadan: Iftari and Eidi bring smiles
After the dental camp concluded, the volunteers distributed Iftari meals among the residents of SOS Village, allowing everyone to break their fast together in a warm and inclusive environment.
The atmosphere became even more joyful when the volunteers distributed Eidi among the children, creating moments of excitement and happiness that perfectly reflected the spirit of Ramadan.
The combination of healthcare service, community bonding, and festive celebration turned the initiative into more than just a charity event—it became a meaningful experience for both volunteers and beneficiaries.
Youth-driven compassion making a real impact
Serving more than 150 individuals, the initiative highlighted the growing role of student networks like SYNCH BDMC in advancing community welfare, healthcare awareness, and social responsibility.
By stepping beyond classrooms and clinics, these future dentists demonstrated that professional education is not only about technical skills—it is also about empathy, service, and leadership.
At a time when preventive healthcare often receives limited attention, initiatives like this remind us that sometimes the most meaningful healthcare begins with simple acts of kindness and awareness.
