Islamabad Dental Hospital conducts special smiles screening for Special Olympics athletes
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Dental Hospital, Barakahu, in collaboration with Special Olympics Pakistan, recently organized a two-day Special Smiles screening event to provide specialized oral healthcare to athletes with special needs from RCCDD Islamabad.
The initiative, held under the supervision of Professor Dr. Saima Azam, Clinical Director Special Smiles and Head of the Department of Operative Dentistry at IDH, focused on improving oral health awareness, prevention, and treatment for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Comprehensive dental screenings and preventive care
A total of 91 athletes underwent detailed oral examinations, which included dental check-ups, hygiene assessments, and preventive counseling. Scaling procedures were also performed for those requiring immediate care.
Out of the total athletes screened, 31 were identified with urgent dental needs and 60 with non-urgent issues. All participants have been scheduled for follow-up treatments in November 2025 at Islamabad Dental Hospital to ensure continuity of care.
Team effort and specialized training
The dental screening was carried out by a dedicated team comprising assistant professors, postgraduate trainees, house officers, and dental assistants from IDH. Prior to the event, Prof. Dr. Saima Azam conducted a specialized training session for the screening team, emphasizing effective communication, management protocols, and dental care techniques for children and adults with special needs.
