ISLAMABAD: For thousands of foreign-qualified doctors and dentists waiting to enter Pakistan’s healthcare system, the wait is over — and the countdown has officially begun. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has issued two crucial public notices announcing the 2026 schedules for the National Equivalence Board (NEB) and National Registration Examination (NRE), two of the most important gateway exams for professional licensing in the country.

This is not just another academic update. For many overseas-qualified Pakistani graduates and foreign-trained dental professionals, these exams are the final bridge between years of education and the legal right to practice in Pakistan. Missing these dates could mean losing months — or even an entire year — in career progression.
NEB 2026: the decisive equivalence exam for foreign graduates
According to the PMDC public notice, the NEB examination will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, through Rawalpindi Medical University. The examination will be centrally conducted in Rawalpindi, making it a high-stakes national event for candidates from across Pakistan and abroad.
The National Equivalence Board (NEB) exam is primarily designed for foreign medical and dental graduates who need degree equivalence before becoming eligible for registration in Pakistan. In simple terms, if a candidate has completed MBBS or BDS from an institution outside Pakistan, the NEB acts as the competency validation mechanism.
The PMDC has already made the standards, structure, and syllabus available on its official website, along with the online registration portal.
For candidates, this means preparation can now become targeted, strategic, and deadline-driven.
NRE 2026: the licensing exam that stands between graduates and practice
The second public notice is even broader in impact. PMDC has announced the complete 2026 National Registration Examination (NRE) schedule, covering both NRE-I and NRE-II sessions.
The schedule is as follows:
NRE-I
• 1st session: Sunday, May 17, 2026
• 2nd session: Sunday, October 11, 2026
NRE-II
• 1st session: June 27–28 and July 4–5, 2026
• 2nd session: November 28–29 and December 5–6, 2026
The National Registration Examination (NRE) is the mandatory licensing exam for foreign-qualified Pakistani nationals holding MBBS or BDS degrees who seek full registration as general practitioners in Pakistan. PMDC has previously described it as a competency-based exam conducted under the PMDC Act to ensure that doctors entering the system meet uniform national standards.
This is the exam that ultimately determines whether a foreign graduate can move from qualification to lawful clinical practice.
NEB vs NRE: who needs to appear in which exam?
This is where confusion often creates panic among graduates.
• NEB = for equivalence of foreign medical/dental qualifications
• NRE = for registration and licensing to practice as GP in Pakistan
In many cases, a foreign graduate may first need to clear NEB for equivalence, and then proceed to NRE for registration, depending on nationality, degree origin, and PMDC recognition status.
That makes these two notices nationally important not only for graduates, but for Pakistan’s future doctor workforce, healthcare staffing, and specialist pipeline.
Why this update matters far beyond exam dates
Pakistan’s healthcare system is already under pressure from workforce gaps, migration, and rising demand for trained clinicians. Every exam cycle directly affects how quickly qualified doctors and dentists can legally join hospitals, clinics, and postgraduate pathways.
By releasing both schedules early, PMDC has effectively given candidates a career map for the entire year. For many families, this means planning travel, documentation, study leave, coaching, and licensing timelines months in advance.
The regulator has advised all candidates to keep visiting the PMDC website for standards, syllabus updates, registration windows, and further notices.
For thousands of doctors and dentists trained abroad, 2026 may now come down to a handful of dates — and what they do before them.
