U.S. dental association launches AI service to speed up dentist credentialing

CHICAGO: The American Dental Association (ADA) has launched an artificial intelligence-powered credentialing service designed to reduce administrative burdens and accelerate the often time-consuming process of verifying dentists for insurance networks.

Developed in collaboration with Boston-based technology firm LightSpun, the ADA Delegated Credentialing Service builds upon the existing ADA-CAQH Provider Data Portal, which has supported more than 150,000 dentists over the past seven years. The platform is operated in partnership with the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH) and allows dentists to centralize their credentialing information in one secure location.

Instead of sending multiple documents to different insurance companies, dentists can upload their information once, enabling insurers to access and verify it directly. This step eliminates duplication and shortens approval times that have historically taken three to six months.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, delays in provider credentialing can cost physicians hundreds of thousands of dollars in foregone income, with dentists facing similar revenue losses when unable to join payer networks.

“By addressing one of the dentist’s most persistent pain points, the ADA is helping to build a more responsive, efficient, and sustainable dental ecosystem,” the association said in a statement.

What dentists can expect

The ADA said its new AI automation tools will streamline primary source verification, improve data accuracy, and reduce onboarding delays from weeks to days.

  • Centralized access: Dentists can log in through the ADA website to update their profiles.
  • AI-driven verification: Automated primary source checks enhance accuracy and compliance.
  • Regular updates: Dentists are prompted every 120 days to confirm their information, a step required to maintain payer standards and ensure data integrity.
  • Free access: The credentialing service remains free of charge for ADA members.

By leveraging AI technology, the ADA aims to strengthen efficiency across dental practices while ensuring dentists can join insurance networks faster and minimize lost income. This innovation also reflects broader trends in U.S. healthcare, where artificial intelligence is being deployed to reduce paperwork, improve workflows, and enhance patient care delivery.

With this new step, the ADA reinforces its role as a leading authority in supporting the dental profession, advancing both technology adoption and administrative efficiency.
