ISLAMABAD: Before they wield drills or polish teeth, Pakistan’s future dentists are being trained in skills that could literally save lives. A high-impact guest lecture on bioethics was held for third- and fourth-year clinical dental students at the School of Dentistry, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, emphasizing that ethical judgment is as critical as clinical expertise.
The session, titled “Obligations and duties of doctors towards patients: A bioethical perspective,” aimed to deepen students’ understanding of professional responsibility in real clinical settings—where decisions affect not just teeth, but patient trust, dignity, and safety.

The guest speaker, Prof. Dr. Imran Alam Moheet from the Ziauddin College of Dentistry, Ziauddin University, delivered an engaging, practice-oriented lecture linking ethical theory to everyday dental care. He highlighted that the dentist’s duty to uphold professional integrity goes beyond technique, and that routine clinical decisions carry ethical consequences impacting patients’ well-being.
Key topics covered included patient-centered care, informed consent, confidentiality, fairness in treatment, and honesty in clinical communication. The lecture stressed that ethical conduct is fundamental to safe dentistry and vital for the long-term credibility of the profession.

In his concluding remarks, Prof Dr Bilal, Principal of the School of Dentistry, underlined the growing importance of bioethics in modern dental practice and thanked Prof Dr Imran Alam Moheet for delivering a timely and meaningful lecture for Pakistan’s future clinicians.
With rising public awareness about patient rights and professional accountability, such academic initiatives signal a shift toward producing dentists who are not only clinically competent but ethically grounded, ready to make decisions that safeguard both oral health and human trust.
