Empowering future dentists: JMDC hosts workshop on obtaining informed consent
KARACHI: The Department of Dentistry at Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) organized an interactive workshop on “Obtaining Informed Consent” to enhance students’ understanding of ethical and legal responsibilities in dental care. The session, facilitated by Prof. Dr. Marium Iqbal, brought together third and final-year BDS students along with the clinical faculty, emphasizing the central role of communication, ethics, and patient trust in clinical decision-making.
Building ethical competence in future dentists
The workshop aimed to strengthen the ethical foundation of dental education by guiding students through real-life case scenarios. Under faculty supervision, students performed role-plays depicting practical situations where informed consent plays a crucial role in ensuring patient autonomy and shared decision-making.
Prof. Dr. Marium Iqbal highlighted that obtaining informed consent is not merely a legal requirement but a reflection of professional integrity and respect for patient rights. She emphasized that effective communication, empathy, and clarity are essential in building trust-based dentist-patient relationships.
Promoting professional responsibility through interactive learning
The participants appreciated the hands-on learning approach, which provided practical insights into ethical dilemmas faced in clinical dentistry. The workshop also reinforced JMDC’s ongoing commitment to producing competent, responsible, and empathetic dental professionals.
By engaging students in experiential learning and ethical reflection, the event aligned with global standards of dental education and underscored the institution’s mission to prepare graduates who uphold the highest standards of patient-centered care.
