RAWALPINDI: In a significant step toward advancing modern orthodontic education, Prof. Dr. Afeef Umar Zia, Head of the Department of Orthodontics at Margalla College of Dentistry, conducted a specialized study session on clear aligner therapy at the Margalla Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS).

The one-hour academic session attracted practicing dentists, MIHS graduates, and alumni, reflecting growing interest in digital and patient-friendly orthodontic solutions. Senior faculty and leadership from MIHS also attended, including Senior Vice Principal Prof. Maj. Shakir, Vice Principal Prof. Dr. Noman Bari, HOD Medical Education Assistant Prof. Dr. Saba Farooq, and heads of Clinical and Basic Sciences departments.

The session provided a structured overview of clear aligner treatment, with emphasis on clinical advantages and fundamental principles. Prof. Dr. Afeef highlighted that aligner therapy offers predictable results when supported by accurate diagnosis, proper case selection, and digital treatment planning. He also explained how technology enhances treatment efficiency, patient compliance, and reduces chairside time.

A key focus of the session was the digital workflow required for an aligner-based orthodontic practice. Participants were guided through virtual treatment planning, covering initial assessment, aligner design, sequencing, and monitoring. The discussion stressed the importance of understanding biomechanics, realistic tooth movement staging, and continuous clinical oversight for successful outcomes.

The interactive session concluded with a question-and-answer segment, where participants raised queries regarding case suitability, patient expectations, workflow integration, and treatment predictability. Prof. Dr. Afeef addressed these with insights drawn from both academic and clinical experience.

Memorandum of Understanding signed for ongoing collaboration

The session formally concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TruAlign, represented by Prof. Dr. Afeef Umar Zia, and MIHS, represented by Vice Principal Prof. Maj. Shakir. The MoU establishes a framework for research collaboration, continuing professional development, and clinical training opportunities, with MIHS graduates and alumni eligible for concessions on clinical case loads.
