Workshop on separated file removal with live demo held at Dow Dental College
KARACHI: The Department of Operative Dentistry at Dow Dental College (DDC) recently organized a highly anticipated workshop on separated file removal. The session combined expert-led lectures, a live patient demonstration, and hands-on training — offering participants a rare opportunity to learn directly from one of the country’s leading clinicians in this niche endodontic procedure.
The workshop was facilitated by Maj. Dr. Ahmed Abdullah (Pak Army), who has successfully performed over 100 separated file removal cases and is co-inventor of a Dental Operating Microscope. His reputation and unique skill set meant the event was booked to capacity well before the date.

The Registrar of DUHS, Dr. Ashar Afaq, graced the occasion as the chief guest, acknowledging the importance of such advanced clinical workshops in enhancing students’ practical knowledge.
Interactive lecture and live demonstration
Dr. Ahmed delivered an insightful lecture that drew strong interest and numerous questions from attendees. The highlight of the workshop was a live demonstration where the microscope camera from the OPD was connected to the lecture hall’s multimedia setup. Participants watched in real time as Dr. Ahmed successfully removed a separated H-file from a disto-buccal canal of a live patient.
Hands-on training in Phantom-Head Lab
After the live demo, participants moved to the Phantom-Head Lab, where they were introduced to the dental operating microscope and practiced using loop devices to remove separated files from plastic blocks under magnification. Each participant received an individual block to complete the exercise.
The workshop concluded with participants expressing immense satisfaction at the hands-on learning experience, thanking the faculty and leadership of DDC — particularly Prof. Dr. Arshad Hasan and Dr. Javeria Ali Khan — for making such an advanced training possible.
