LAHORE: Microscope-assisted endodontics is gaining further ground in Pakistan's dental education sector as a two-day continuing dental education workshop series brought hands-on training in dental operating microscopes (DOM) and separated instrument retrieval to postgraduate trainees and faculty at two leading dental institutions in Lahore.
The first day of the training was held at CMH Lahore Institute of Dentistry, where Prof. Dr. Arshad Hasan conducted a workshop titled “Introduction to Dental Operating Microscopes,” training around 20 FCPS trainees and faculty members.
The session introduced participants to the foundational principles of microscope-assisted dentistry and provided essential practical knowledge for incorporating magnification into routine clinical practice. The training was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Rubab Shirazi, Head of the Department, who served as the main focal person for the event, with Dr. Sobia supporting the facilitation. Principal Dr. Samir Kazi also extended his support to the initiative.
The workshop series then moved to Lahore Medical & Dental College (LM&DC) for its second day, where participants took part in two back-to-back practical sessions extending from morning to afternoon.
The first LM&DC workshop focused on dental operating microscope setup for first-time users, covering key steps including interpupillary distance adjustment, parfocaling, diopter setting and correct operator-patient positioning. These fundamentals are critical for achieving comfortable, stable and effective microscope-assisted visualization during dental procedures.
The second session moved from microscope familiarization to a more advanced endodontic procedure: separated instrument retrieval from root canals. The technique was demonstrated using the BTR pen on a 3D-printed tooth model, allowing participants to observe and practise the approach in a controlled hands-on training environment.
The LM&DC sessions were conducted under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Saima Razzak, Professor and Head of the Department of Operative Dentistry. Principal Prof. Dr. Aaqib Sohail also supported the program, with his efforts instrumental in bringing a dental operating microscope to the institution.
The hands-on component was further strengthened through the provision of another dental operating microscope by Mr. Altash Butt. His provision of the equipment was facilitated by Mr. Qaiser of Mr Dental, while logistical support across both days helped ensure the smooth execution of the workshops.
The practical focus of the second day gave participants exposure not only to the basic ergonomics and optical settings required for effective microscope use but also to a technically demanding endodontic procedure involving the retrieval of separated instruments from root canals.
Participants and faculty members at both institutions responded enthusiastically to the training, with organizers reporting strong engagement throughout the day-long program at Lahore Medical & Dental College.
The two-day workshop series adds to a broader effort to expand microscope-assisted endodontic training in Pakistan, particularly by giving dental trainees and faculty direct exposure to technologies and techniques that can enhance visualization and precision in endodontic practice.
The initiative also builds on Prof. Dr. Arshad Hasan's previous microscope-assisted endodontic workshops at dental institutions, including LUMHS Jamshoro, and reflects continuing collaboration between his practice and dental colleges across Pakistan to strengthen postgraduate and faculty training in modern endodontics.
