Ziauddin College of Dentistry organizes second tooth carving competition for first-year students

KARACHI: The second tooth carving competition at Ziauddin college of dentistry brought energy, curiosity, and competitive learning to the campus as first-year BDS students demonstrated their understanding of tooth morphology, an essential foundation in oral biology and preclinical dental training. The event, held on 10 November 2025, was organized by the department of oral biology under the leadership of Dr. Fizza Saher, head of the department.

A platform to build early clinical competence

The competition aimed to enhance students’ anatomical knowledge while strengthening manual dexterity, a critical skill set required for operative dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, and restorative procedures. Faculty members including Dr. Hira Batool, Dr. Khushbu Lohana, and Dr. Naseer Khan mentored students throughout the preparation phase, ensuring they learned not only carving technique but also the scientific reasoning behind tooth anatomy.

Participants carved tooth models with emphasis on:

  • anatomical accuracy
  • correct proportions
  • morphological detail
  • overall craftsmanship and finishing

Judged by senior academicians

The competition was adjudicated by Dr. Sadia Hassan, professor and HOD oral biology at Altamash institute of dental sciences, and Dr. Fizza Saher, associate professor and HOD Ziauddin college of dentistry. The judges commended the creativity and discipline reflected in the carvings, noting that such exercises significantly strengthen early professional confidence among dental undergraduates.

Leadership insights, recognition

Prof. Dr. Wahab Buksh Kadri, principal Ziauddin college of dentistry, appreciated the participants’ dedication and highlighted the institution’s commitment to fostering experiential learning environments. Awards were presented to the top three performers, while certificates and shields were distributed to judges and faculty mentors in recognition of their academic support.

The event underscored Ziauddin college of dentistry’s ongoing efforts to provide engaging, hands-on, and innovative learning experiences that align with modern dental education standards and support the development of future-ready clinicians.
