Model competition In Oral Biology highlights innovation among BDS students at Bahria University Dental College
KARACHI: The Department of Oral Biology, Bahria University Dental College (BUDC), organized a model competition for first-year BDS students in September, under the supervision of HOD and Associate Professor Dr. Beenish Fatima Alam. The event was designed to reinforce theoretical concepts through creative, hands-on learning while promoting teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills among aspiring dental professionals.
A total of 10 student groups, each consisting of 4–5 members, participated in the competition. Their projects reflected a remarkable fusion of art and science, inspired by dental and orofacial structures. The life-sized anatomical displays vividly brought the histology and morphology of orofacial structures to life, demonstrating the students’ deep understanding of oral biology and their ability to translate scientific learning into creative expression.
Judging and recognition
The competition was evaluated by Dr. Daud Mirza, HOD Oral Pathology, and Dr. Shama Asghar, HOD Operative Dentistry, who assessed the models for scientific accuracy, creativity, and presentation. The Department of Oral Biology, BUDC, extended its gratitude to both judges for their expertise and valuable feedback, which greatly enriched the learning experience for all participants.
While all participants were commended for their exceptional efforts, three groups stood out for their outstanding models:
- First place: “Haversian System”
- Second place: “Contact Points and Embrasures”
- Third place: “Salivary Glands”
Celebrating creativity and learning
The Department of Oral Biology at BUDC emphasized that the competition not only strengthened students’ understanding of core oral biology concepts but also enhanced their ability to integrate scientific precision with artistic creativity. Certificates of appreciation were presented to both organizers and participants, recognizing their commitment, enthusiasm, and contribution to the department’s academic excellence.
This initiative reaffirmed Bahria University Dental College’s dedication to promoting experiential learning and fostering intellectual curiosity among future dental professionals. The model competition stood as a testament to BUDC’s commitment to nurturing innovation and bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical understanding.
