KARACHI: A day before Pakistan marked its 79th Independence Day, a group of dental professionals, students and community volunteers brought a message of oral health and service to schoolchildren in Karachi.
The DentEd Collective, in collaboration with Serve2Smile, organized a community dental camp at Government Girls Secondary School, Mehmoodabad, with the initiative focusing on oral health awareness and the importance of developing preventive dental care habits from an early age.
Rather than keeping oral health education within the boundaries of a dental clinic, the organizers took the message directly into the school community, engaging children through guidance on proper oral hygiene practices and the importance of seeking timely dental care.
Taking dental awareness beyond the clinic
The initiative highlighted a key challenge in community oral healthcare: awareness about prevention needs to reach children where everyday health habits are formed.
Through the camp, participants were introduced to appropriate oral hygiene practices, while the organizers emphasized the value of early awareness in encouraging healthier long-term habits.
The initiative also demonstrated how student-led and community-based organizations can contribute to oral health promotion by combining professional guidance, volunteer participation and outreach at the grassroots level.
DentEd Collective and Serve2Smile join forces
The camp was jointly organized by The DentEd Collective and Serve2Smile, bringing together members of both organizations for planning, coordination, outreach and execution.
Aleena Gul, Founder of Serve2Smile, and Syeda Kulsoom Nawaz, Co-Founder of Serve2Smile, contributed to organizing and coordinating the initiative.
Representing The DentEd Collective, Founder Muhammad Bilal and President Alssa Uqaily led and supported the camp and its coordination.
Several members of The DentEd Collective also played roles behind the scenes. Haris Aziz, Director PR & Marketing, supported public relations and coordination, while Mahnoor Umrani, Director Graphics, contributed to the visual and creative requirements.
Muhammad Ishar, Campus Head, Karachi Metropolitan University (KMU), and Yumna, KMU Campus Ambassador, supported outreach and coordination. Shahroz Memon, Team Media, The DentEd Collective, contributed to media coverage and documentation.
The organization also acknowledged the guidance and encouragement of its mentors, including Prof. Dr. Sana Mirza, Dr. Ram Pershad and Dr. Jazib Memon.
Why the Independence Day timing mattered
The timing of the camp added another dimension to the initiative.
Held on August 13, just one day before Independence Day, the activity connected oral healthcare with a broader message of community service and social responsibility.
For the organizers, contributing to a healthier and more aware generation was presented as one way of expressing the spirit of national progress—not simply through celebration, but through practical service to the community.
A message that could extend beyond one dental camp
The significance of the initiative ultimately lies beyond the single-day activity.
