KMU promotes preventive oral health awareness among underserved schoolchildren
KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan University (KMU), through its Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, continues to strengthen its commitment to public service by promoting preventive oral healthcare among underserved communities in Karachi.
As part of an undergraduate dental course project, KMU represented the university in an Oral Health Screening and Awareness Program conducted at S.I. Ali Bhai School, a government-run educational institution. The initiative reflects a growing recognition that preventive oral healthcare is far more accessible and cost-effective than curative dental treatment, particularly for economically disadvantaged populations.
Focusing on prevention over costly treatment
During the visit, an oral health awareness session was organized for both schoolchildren and staff, emphasizing simple daily practices such as proper toothbrushing, oral hygiene habits, and early disease prevention. Faculty members highlighted how basic preventive measures can significantly reduce the burden of dental disease and limit the need for expensive clinical interventions later in life.
The program was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sana Adeeba Islam, Head of the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry, and coordinated by Dr. Abdul Aleem, Senior Registrar and Visit Coordinator. Dr. Mudassir Hussain was also present, contributing to the academic and clinical engagement.
Active student participation, community engagement
Dental students and house officers participated enthusiastically, interacting with children, assisting in screenings, and reinforcing oral hygiene messages in an age-appropriate and engaging manner. Their involvement not only enhanced community outreach but also strengthened students’ understanding of public health dentistry and real-world preventive care.
To encourage positive participation and acknowledge cooperation, gift hampers were distributed among the schoolchildren, adding a supportive and motivational element to the activity.
Sustaining community-based oral health initiatives
Through such outreach programs, KMU continues to extend oral health education to government schools and underserved populations. The university remains committed to long-term, community-based preventive strategies that improve public oral health outcomes while fostering socially responsible dental education.
Initiatives like these reinforce the vital role academic institutions can play in bridging gaps in healthcare access and embedding prevention-focused thinking into Pakistan’s dental education framework.
