Prof Ayyaz Ali Khan receives dual Lifetime Achievement Awards at PAP 46th International Conference
LAHORE: In a moment of pride for Pakistan’s dental fraternity, Prof Ayyaz Ali Khan, Dean of the Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences & Research (IADSR), has been conferred two prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of his exemplary contributions to dentistry, oral health policy, and academic excellence.
The honors were presented during the 46th International Conference of the Pakistan Association of Pathologists (PAP), held at the Pearl Continental Hotel, Lahore, where Prof Khan received one Lifetime Achievement Award from PAP and another from the Pakistan Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (PSOMP) in the same event.
A life dedicated to dental education and public health
Prof Ayyaz Ali Khan’s name is synonymous with dental advancement and community health in Pakistan. Over a distinguished career spanning decades, he has held some of the most influential academic and professional positions in the country and abroad.
He currently serves as Dean, Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences & Research (IADSR), and CEO, Health Education & Research (HER). He previously served as Professor of Dentistry at FPGMI, Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex, and later as Dean of Dentistry at Superior University, Lahore.
Prof Khan has also played a pivotal role internationally as Advisor on Oral Health to WHO-EMRO, contributing his expertise in Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iran. He is a member of WHO’s Expert Panel on Oral Health of the Elderly and serves on the WHO Informal Expert Panel for Global Strategy on Oral Health.
Global recognition and academic excellence
An alumnus of de’Montmorency College of Dentistry, Prof Khan earned his M.Sc. in Epidemiology & Health Planning from the University of Wales and a Ph.D. from the National University of Ireland. His numerous distinctions include FDSRCPS (Glasgow), MFDSRCS (England), MCGD (UK), and FRSH (UK).
He has also served as National Coordinator – Oral Health, WHO Collaborative Program in Pakistan, Associate Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Punjab, and Convener, Expert Committee on Oral Health, Pakistan Medical Research Council.
A recipient of multiple national and international honors, Prof Khan has received three National Research Productivity Awards and the Charles Wallace Trust Award. In 2011, he became the Founding President of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) – Pakistan Section, marking another milestone in his leadership journey.
Legacy of research, mentorship, and service
With 149 publications, 23 research grants, and participation in over 70 national and international conferences, Prof Khan’s contributions to dental research are monumental. He serves on the editorial boards of seven international and national journals and is the Chief Editor of the Journal of Pakistan Dental Association (JPDA).
His legacy also includes mentoring seven PhD and twenty-nine MPhil scholars, shaping the next generation of dental researchers and educators. As an examiner for nearly every major dental university and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), his influence extends across Pakistan’s dental education ecosystem.
Champion of community outreach
Prof Khan’s vision for accessible healthcare was realized through the Shaikh Zayed Hospital Community Outreach Program (2004–2010) — a joint initiative with WHO-Pakistan that pioneered innovations in health promotion and primary healthcare delivery.
He also co-directed the 2005 Earthquake Relief Operation at Shaikh Zayed Hospital, which established a 1,500-bed emergency facility providing treatment to thousands of affected individuals — a testament to his compassion and leadership beyond academia.
