QUETTA: A rare and complex case of Recurrent Ameloblastoma in a 9-year-old Afghan child was recently presented at Bolan Dental College, Quetta, shedding light on the clinical, diagnostic, and surgical complexities of managing aggressive odontogenic tumors in pediatric patients.

The case presentation, titled “Navigating the Complexities of a Challenging Recurrent Ameloblastoma,” was delivered by Dr. Moin Akhtar and Dr. Jalal Khan from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Unit-II at Bolan Medical Complex Hospital (BMCH). The session was part of the college’s ongoing clinical case series, aimed at enhancing academic and clinical training for dental professionals in Balochistan.

Ameloblastoma is a rare but locally invasive odontogenic tumor that primarily affects the jaw. While usually benign, its high recurrence rate and potential for significant disfigurement or complications make it a critical concern—especially in younger patients.

In this case, the child had previously undergone surgery for Ameloblastoma but returned with rapid tumor progression, underscoring the condition’s aggressive nature and need for timely multidisciplinary management. The treatment involved close collaboration between pediatricians, anesthetists, radiologists, and maxillofacial surgeons.

Under the supervision of Dr. Jahangir Hammad, Head of OMFS Unit-II, BMCH, the surgical team performed a meticulously planned operation to remove the tumor while preserving vital facial structures. This delicate balance between oncologic clearance and functional preservation was vital to the patient’s recovery and long-term quality of life.

The presentation was attended by faculty members, house officers, demonstrators, and practicing dental surgeons, creating a rich academic environment for clinical learning. Dr. Talha Asad Tareen, Vice Principal of Bolan Dental College, appreciated the OMFS team’s efforts and acknowledged the significance of such clinical sessions in under-resourced regions like Balochistan.

On behalf of Prof. Nasrullah Mengal, Principal of Bolan Dental College, Dr. Tareen emphasized that such complex cases offer critical learning platforms for young dental professionals and highlight the importance of interdepartmental collaboration in managing oral and maxillofacial pathologies.

This case serves as a powerful reminder of the need for early detection, ongoing medical education, and investment in surgical infrastructure to support advanced dental care in underserved regions.
