HBS Medical & Dental College advances clinical excellence with laser dentistry and VELscope® training
ISLAMABAD: The HBS Medical & Dental College has taken a significant step toward advancing contemporary dental education by hosting an advanced academic and hands-on training session focused on laser dentistry and VELscope® oral cancer screening, two technologies increasingly shaping the future of clinical dental practice.
The session brought together faculty members, clinicians, and postgraduate trainees for an immersive learning experience that blended theoretical insight with practical application, reinforcing the institution’s emphasis on skill-based, evidence-driven dental education.
Advancing precision through laser dentistry
The laser dentistry segment was facilitated by Prof. Dr. Joharia Azhar, a leading authority in the field and CEO of Pathodont Polyclinics. She delivered a comprehensive overview of the clinical applications of lasers in dentistry, highlighting their role in soft-tissue procedures, enhanced precision, reduced bleeding, improved healing, and greater patient comfort.
To translate theory into practice, participants took part in a hands-on laser training session conducted on goat head models, enabling them to safely practice soft-tissue procedures under expert supervision. The practical component allowed attendees to gain firsthand experience in laser handling, technique, and clinical decision-making.
VELscope® demonstration for early oral cancer detection
In a separate clinical segment, a live hands-on demonstration of VELscope® was conducted on patients, underscoring its importance in early detection of oral potentially malignant disorders. VELscope® holds special significance as Pakistan’s first DRAP-registered oral cancer screening device, offering clinicians a powerful adjunctive tool for preventive oral healthcare.
The demonstration emphasized how fluorescence visualization can support early diagnosis, timely referral, and improved patient outcomes—particularly vital in a country with a high burden of oral cancer.

Held under the leadership of Principal Prof. Dr. Shazia Nawabi, the session reflected HBS Medical & Dental College’s continued commitment to innovation, clinical excellence, and modern teaching methodologies.
