QUETTA: The Balochistan Scientific and Research Society (BSRS), in collaboration with the Medical Women’s Association of Pakistan (MWAP) – Balochistan Zone, recently organized an orientation session, to promote scientific research among medical students at Bolan Medical College (BMC), Quetta.

The session featured Professor Dr. Nabiha Farasat, Director of MWAP Balochistan, as the keynote speaker, while Additional Commissioner Quetta, Mr. Sana Ullah Agha, presided as the chief guest.

Dr. Nabiha underscored the critical role of research in driving evidence-based clinical practices and informed public health decision-making. Addressing a packed hall of undergraduate medical students, she emphasized that “the future of healthcare rests on the ability to question, observe, and generate new knowledge through scientific inquiry.”

Empowering students through foundational research skills

Following the keynote, a basic training session on medical research was held jointly by BSRS and MWAP, introducing students to the principles of scientific thinking, research methodology, and literature review.

This initiative reflects the growing emphasis on early-stage research exposure in Pakistan’s medical education, especially in underserved regions like Balochistan.

Strategic collaboration to expand research training

In a major step forward, MWAP, BSRS, and the Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL) signed a tripartite collaboration agreement, alongside Al Arif Hospital and the BMC Research Cell.

This agreement will facilitate:

  • A three-way training exchange program between PILL, BMC, and MWAP
  • Capacity building for faculty and students in mental health, community-based studies, and clinical research
  • Inter-institutional mentorship and research publishing support
  • This joint platform aims to strengthen medical research infrastructure in Balochistan and produce
  • future-ready medical professionals who can contribute to global health knowledge.

The BSRS orientation session and MWAP’s continued involvement underscore a shared vision to foster a culture of scientific thinking among medical students in Pakistan’s most underserved province.
