BMC Quetta community dentistry department holds school oral health awareness session

QUETTA: The department of community and preventive dentistry at Bolan Medical College (BMC) Quetta recently organized an oral health awareness session at Government Girls Model High School, Mission Road, Quetta to educate children about maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing dental diseases.

The session was led by BDS second professional students under the supervision of Dr. Ashfaq Khawaja Khail (head of department, community dentistry), along with Dr. Erum Sami, Dr. Mahesh Kumar, Dr. Fazal Babar, Dr. Azad Khan, Dr. Mehwish Jaffrey, Dr. Waheed Khan, and Dr. Naeem Babar.

The event was attended by the school’s teaching faculty, Dr. Talha Asad and Dr. Hafeez Sial (vice principals, dental college Quetta), and Dr. Aqeel Shah from the department of community medicine, BMC Quetta.

Speakers highlighted essential topics including oral hygiene maintenance, healthy dietary habits, prevention of dental caries, and oral cancer awareness. Demonstrations were conducted to teach students proper toothbrushing and flossing techniques using dental models, enhancing practical learning.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Ashfaq Khawaja Khail emphasized the concept of “Healthy Schools” and the significance of early oral health education in shaping long-term positive health behaviors among children.

As part of the initiative, oral hygiene aids including toothbrushes and toothpastes were distributed among schoolchildren, generously supported by Colgate. The school administration appreciated the BDS second-year students for organizing a well-executed, impactful community outreach activity.

This initiative by BMC Quetta’s community dentistry department reflects the institution’s commitment to community-based dental education, promoting preventive oral health awareness among young populations in Balochistan.
