ABBOTTABAD: In a significant step towards public oral health promotion and outreach, Abbottabad International Dental College organized a free dental camp at Central Jail Abbottabad on May 31, 2025. The initiative was led by the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry and aimed at improving dental care access for inmates while equipping dental students with practical community-based clinical experience.

This impactful event aligned with the institution’s commitment to preventive dentistry and community engagement—hallmarks of modern dental education rooted in service and empathy.

Expert-led initiative with student participation

The camp was supervised by a distinguished team of faculty members, including Dr. Qurat-ul-Ain (Head of Department), Dr. Kiran Ammar, Dr. Muzna Anwar, and Dr. Umaiya, along with house officers and 2nd-year BDS students who actively took part in providing treatment and raising awareness.

Services provided at the dental camp

A total of 126 dental checkups were performed, and 77 clinical procedures were carried out, including:

  • Scaling for plaque and tartar removal
  • Fillings for dental caries
  • Anxiety scale assessments to gauge patients’ comfort and emotional responses

Medical equipment and hygiene protocols

The camp was fully equipped with:

  • 2 portable dental units
  • 100 sterilized dental kits
  • 2 packs of disposable gloves and masks
  • 25 ART (Atraumatic Restorative Treatment) kits
  • Portable scalers with 50 tips
  • Suction tips, disposable glasses, protective goggles, and caps
  • Medicines and oral hygiene kits for patient aftercare

These provisions ensured that the dental camp maintained high standards of infection control and patient safety.

Outcomes and impact

This free dental camp for inmates in Abbottabad addressed a critical gap in prison healthcare by offering timely oral health interventions to a marginalized population. Simultaneously, it provided students with firsthand exposure to public health dentistry, enabling them to practice patient communication, empathy, and technical skills in a real-world setting.

The Department extended heartfelt thanks to the Principal of Abbottabad International Dental College for their continued support and for making this outreach activity possible.
