ABBOTTABAD: A free dental health camp organized by the Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry at Women Dental College Abbottabad provided oral health education, dental screening, and preventive care guidance to 800 schoolchildren, reinforcing the importance of early oral disease detection and oral hygiene awareness among young students.
The community outreach initiative was conducted at The Arqam School and The Royal Institute of Science on May 13, 2026, under the leadership of Dr. Qurat-ul-Ain, Associate Professor, Department of Community and Preventive Dentistry.
The activity brought together faculty and staff from the Community Dentistry Department, faculty members from the Research Department, second-year BDS students, members of the Student Society of Oral Health Education, and college administration representatives.
Promoting oral health awareness among children
The primary objective of the camp was to educate schoolchildren about the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing common dental diseases through healthy daily habits.
During interactive awareness sessions, participants received practical guidance on proper tooth-brushing techniques, oral hygiene maintenance, and preventive measures to reduce the risk of dental caries, gum disease, and oral health complications.
Dental models, educational charts, and visual demonstrations were used to help students better understand common oral health issues, including tooth decay and bad breath, while emphasizing the long-term benefits of preventive dental care.
Free dental screening for 800 students
As part of the outreach program, dental teams conducted oral examinations and screenings to identify potential dental problems requiring professional attention.
According to the organizers, a total of 800 students were screened during the camp, including:
- 350 students at The Arqam School
- 450 students at The Royal Institute of Science
Children identified with dental concerns were referred for further evaluation and treatment where necessary, supporting early diagnosis and timely intervention.
Strengthening preventive dentistry and community outreach
Dental public health experts emphasize that school-based oral health programs play a critical role in reducing the burden of preventable dental diseases. Early education on oral hygiene practices can significantly improve lifelong oral health outcomes and encourage healthier behaviors among children.
