A mother’s heartbreak, a legacy of life: PDA mourns young dental student, hails mother’s brave decision

KARACHI: The Pakistan Dental Association (PDA) Karachi Chapter has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic passing of Syed Sultan Zafar, a 22-year-old promising dental student, whose life was cut short in a sudden accident. In a heartfelt condolence message, PDA Karachi chapter acknowledged the grief of their esteemed colleague, Dr. Mehar Afroz, a dedicated physician and Consultant Nephrologist at SIUT, who endured the unimaginable loss of her only son.

“There are no words that can truly ease the pain of such a profound loss,” the PDA Karachi Chapter noted in its message. “The passing of a child leaves a void that echoes through a lifetime. Our hearts go out to Dr. Afroz and her family during this most difficult time. May they find strength, solace, and support in the love and prayers of those around them.”

A tragedy turned into hope

Only a day earlier, SIUT confirmed that Sultan Zafar’s organs had given a new lease of life to two patients. Despite her devastating personal loss, Dr. Mehar Afroz made the brave decision to donate her son’s kidneys, saving two lives in the process.

This act of courage drew admiration across Pakistan’s medical community. Prof. Adib Rizvi, Director of SIUT, praised the gesture, calling it “an inspiring example for society to emulate in saving lives.”

Sultan, described by peers and teachers as compassionate, bright, and full of promise, dreamed of serving humanity through dentistry. Though his own journey was tragically cut short, his legacy now lives on—embodied in the patients who received his organs and in the hope his story has ignited for a culture of organ donation in Pakistan.

For the dental and medical fraternity, Sultan’s story is both heartbreaking and inspiring—a reminder of life’s fragility, but also of the extraordinary strength compassion can bring even in the darkest moments.

As the PDA Karachi Chapter, SIUT colleagues, and friends of the family mourn this profound loss, they also celebrate a mother’s strength and a son’s enduring contribution to humanity.
