KARACHI: A community dentistry initiative by Jinnah Medical and Dental College (JMDC) brought oral health education, preventive dental care and clinical screening to 250 students at Government Boys Secondary School (GBSS) Sharfabad, Karachi.

The initiative was conducted on August 20, 2026, by JMDC’s Community Dentistry team under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Mohsin Haider, Assistant Professor and Head of Department, Community Dentistry.

The outreach programme combined dental examinations with practical oral hygiene education, giving students an opportunity to learn about oral health while having their teeth and mouths checked by the dental team.

250 students receive dental checkups

The JMDC team examined 250 students from Grade 1 through Grade 10, visiting different classrooms to conduct oral health checkups in the presence of their respective class teachers.

The team included two demonstrators, Dr. Arish Sohail and Dr. Aimen Imran, along with three house officers — Dr. Areeba Raza, Dr. Fatima Al Zohra and Dr. Huzaifa Tariq — supported by second-year BDS students.

The classroom-based approach allowed the dental team to reach students across different grade levels while incorporating oral health education into the school environment.

But the initiative went beyond simply identifying dental problems.

Brushing demonstration turns advice into action

One of the key components of the programme was a practical tooth-brushing demonstration.

Using dental models, the team demonstrated proper tooth-brushing techniques to help students understand how effective daily brushing can contribute to maintaining good oral hygiene.

For children, practical demonstrations can make oral health advice easier to understand than verbal instructions alone, particularly when they can see the technique being performed and relate it to their own daily routine.

The programme also reinforced the importance of preventive oral healthcare — an approach that aims to encourage healthy habits before dental problems become more serious.

Oral hygiene kits distributed to students
The preventive message was accompanied by a practical resource.

Colgate oral hygiene maintenance kits were distributed to the students, giving them tools to continue practising the oral hygiene lessons shared during the session.

The combination of screening, demonstration and oral hygiene resources meant that the initiative addressed three connected aspects of school-based dental outreach: identifying oral health concerns, improving knowledge and encouraging students to apply what they had learned at home.

BDS students take oral health message into classrooms
The outreach also provided second-year BDS students with an opportunity to participate directly in community dentistry.

Following the dental checkups, the students conducted an oral health awareness session, using charts and posters to communicate key oral health messages and encourage greater awareness among their peers.

The involvement of dental students added an educational dimension to the initiative while allowing future dental professionals to practise communicating preventive health information in a school setting.

Community dentistry programmes can play an important role in connecting dental education with public awareness, particularly when students are encouraged to communicate oral health information in accessible and practical ways.

Why school-based oral health education matters
Childhood and adolescence are important periods for developing everyday oral hygiene habits.

Regular tooth brushing, appropriate use of fluoride toothpaste, healthy dietary practices and timely dental visits can all contribute to maintaining oral health and identifying problems at an earlier stage.

School-based initiatives can provide an opportunity to introduce these messages directly to children in a setting where they can be reinforced through demonstrations and visual education.

For the JMDC team, the Sharfabad programme therefore combined preventive dentistry with hands-on community engagement, rather than limiting the initiative to a one-time dental examination.

School principal appreciates JMDC initiative
The initiative was welcomed by the school administration.

The principal of GBSS Sharfabad expressed appreciation for the programme and commended the JMDC team for its efforts to promote oral health awareness and preventive care among the students.

The recognition reflected the broader value of collaboration between dental education institutions and schools in promoting oral health awareness among children.

From dental checkup to healthier habits
The JMDC Community Dentistry team's visit demonstrated how a relatively focused school outreach programme can combine several elements of preventive oral healthcare.

Students received dental examinations, observed proper brushing techniques, participated in an oral health awareness session and received oral hygiene maintenance kits.

The initiative also gave BDS students and dental professionals an opportunity to take oral health education beyond the dental clinic and into the classroom.

For the 250 students of GBSS Sharfabad, the most important takeaway may ultimately be what happens after the dental team leaves: whether the lessons demonstrated through models, charts and posters become part of their everyday oral hygiene routines.

That is where school-based preventive dentistry can have its most lasting impact — turning a single day of dental education into healthier habits that continue long after the checkup is over.
