Ergonomics in dentistry takes spotlight at Bolan Dental College Quetta

QUETTA: The weekly academic session at Bolan Dental College (BDC) Quetta featured an insightful lecture on ergonomics in dentistry, delivered by Dr Waheed Kakar, Demonstrator in the Department of Community Dentistry. The session shed light on the importance of ergonomics in protecting the health of dental professionals and improving clinical performance.

Dr Waheed explained that ergonomics is the science of designing the workspace and tasks to match the physical capabilities of healthcare providers, thereby minimizing discomfort, fatigue, and injury. He stressed that in dentistry, ergonomic awareness is critical for long-term career sustainability.

Posture-related health challenges in dentistry

One of the major issues highlighted during the lecture was the high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dentists, house officers, and dental assistants. Poor posture, repetitive hand movements, awkward positioning during procedures, and poorly designed equipment often lead to chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain.

Preventive measures and practical recommendations

To combat these challenges, Dr Waheed recommended:

  • Maintaining proper chair and patient positioning
  • Practicing regular stretching and relaxation exercises
  • Incorporating short breaks during lengthy dental procedures
  • Using ergonomically designed dental equipment and operator chairs

He also emphasized the psychological burden dentists face due to the precision-driven nature of their work, noting that stress management should be prioritized alongside physical wellbeing.

Positive reception and impact

The session was warmly received by faculty, students, and house officers of BDC. Attendees appreciated the practical insights, acknowledging that the lecture encouraged them to prioritize their own health while serving patients effectively.

This academic initiative reflects Bolan Dental College’s commitment to promoting professional development, preventive education, and healthcare sustainability in the dental fraternity of Pakistan.
