Nutrition and oral health take center stage at Ziauddin Dental College session
KARACHI: The Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnosis at Ziauddin Dental College, in collaboration with Abbott, organized a nutrition awareness session focusing on the critical link between nutrition and oral health. The session emphasized the role of balanced nutrition in managing anemia, protein malnutrition, recurrent oral ulcers, and restricted mouth opening, particularly among patients with compromised systemic health.
Systemic nutrition and oral health connection
The event opened with a welcome address by Dr Aeman Ali, Senior Registrar, who discussed how nutritional deficiencies directly affect oral mucosal health, wound healing, and immune resilience.
She noted that inadequate intake of iron, folate, vitamin B12, and zinc can lead to mucosal atrophy, glossitis, delayed healing, and recurrent oral lesions, underscoring the need for a holistic approach to patient management.
Abbott introduces nutritional interventions
A representative from Abbott presented the company’s specialized nutrition products — Ensure and Glucerna — designed for patients with swallowing difficulties, malnutrition, or compromised oral function.
The presentation highlighted how targeted nutritional supplementation can support recovery, energy balance, and oral function in patients with chronic or systemic conditions affecting their oral cavity.
Clinical insights, case discussions
Interactive clinical case discussions followed, where faculty and participants reviewed cases demonstrating how nutrition impacts oral health outcomes.
Examples included anemia-related glossitis, malnutrition-associated ulcerations, and trismus, showing measurable improvement through nutritional support and dietary correction.
The discussions emphasized that oral and systemic healing can be accelerated when patients receive adequate micronutrients and protein-based supplements.
Promoting integrated oral healthcare
Faculty members from the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnosis reiterated the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between dental professionals, nutritionists, and physicians to ensure comprehensive patient care.
They emphasized that such educational initiatives enhance clinical awareness, preventive care, and evidence-based practice in oral medicine.
Participants praised the session as a “timely and practical learning platform” that bridged the gap between nutritional science and oral healthcare.
