LAHORE: The Institute of Advanced Dental Sciences and Research (IADSR) conducted a two-day hands-on workshop on Exodontia, equipping dental practitioners with advanced knowledge and practical skills in tooth extraction techniques and management of extraction-related complications.
The workshop was organized as part of the institute’s Professional Diploma in Advanced General Dentistry (PDAGD-20) programme. The training was facilitated by Prof. Arshad Mahmood Malik, BDS, MDS, FICD, FPFA, Dean of HBS Dental College, Islamabad.
Comprehensive overview of exodontia
The workshop commenced with an overview of the history and evolution of exodontia, followed by detailed discussions on dental anatomy and its relevance to tooth extraction procedures.
Participants received in-depth instruction on the anatomical characteristics of individual teeth, root morphology, root curvature, and root angulation, all of which are considered essential factors in planning safe and effective extractions.
Focus on pre-surgical assessment, clinical decision-making
A major component of the workshop focused on pre-surgical assessment and patient evaluation.
Prof. Arshad explained the importance of obtaining a comprehensive patient history and conducting systematic clinical assessments, including review of systems, physical examination, extraoral and intraoral evaluation, radiographic assessment, and relevant laboratory investigations.
The workshop also covered the assessment of furcation involvement and demonstrated techniques for measuring furcation depth, helping participants better understand factors that may complicate dental extractions.
Hands-on training addresses real-world clinical challenges
The second day of the workshop was devoted entirely to practical training and hands-on exercises designed to address challenges commonly encountered in clinical practice.
Participants received demonstrations on the appropriate use of various extraction instruments, including elevators, forceps, and instruments used in managing impacted teeth.
Prof. Arshad also explained the clinical applications of different elevators, including Coupland elevators, Cryer’s elevators, and angular elevators, highlighting their indications and techniques of use during various extraction procedures.
The hands-on sessions included supervised tooth extraction procedures on patients, allowing participants to apply theoretical concepts in clinical settings and seek guidance on managing procedural difficulties and complications.
Strengthening continuing professional development in dentistry
Continuing dental education experts emphasize that practical training programmes such as exodontia workshops play an essential role in enhancing clinical competence, improving patient safety, and enabling dentists to stay updated with evolving treatment approaches and evidence-based techniques.
According to IADSR, the workshop concluded with active participation and positive feedback from attendees, reflecting the growing demand among dental practitioners for structured, skills-based continuing professional development opportunities.
The institute said such initiatives remain integral to its mission of strengthening postgraduate dental training and advancing the quality of clinical dental practice in Pakistan.
