ADA living guideline program seeks input on oral cancer vital staining
CHICAGO: The American Dental Association (ADA) Living Guideline Program is inviting dentists, healthcare professionals, patients, and policymakers to provide feedback on new recommendations for the early detection and management of oral cancer. The call for comment, focused on the use of vital staining adjuncts, will remain open through Nov. 28, 2025.
Following the initial recommendation on brush cytology, the ADA Living Guideline Program continues its collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine to update the 2017 guideline on the evaluation of potentially malignant oral disorders and oral cavity cancer. Public input is a key part of this process to ensure evidence-informed, patient-centered guidance.
How to provide feedback
- Download and review the draft vital staining recommendations from the ADA website.
- Register for an optional virtual listening session on Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. CT. Attendance is not mandatory to submit comments.
- Submit your comments and suggestions online at ADA.org/GuidelineComments before the Nov. 28 deadline.
The ADA will review all submitted feedback and incorporate insights into the final vital staining recommendations, which are expected to be published in early 2026. Additional recommendations on the early detection of oral cavity or lip squamous cell carcinoma and oral potentially malignant disorders will be released for public comment in the future.
Why this matters for oral health professionals
- Ensures updated clinical guidance based on the latest evidence.
- Promotes early detection of oral cancer, improving patient outcomes.
- Engages clinicians, patients, and policymakers in guideline development.
Participation in this public comment period allows dental professionals and the public to directly influence ADA guidelines, supporting safer, more effective oral cancer screening and management practices.
