MIRPUR KHAS: On the occasion of World Oral Health Day (WOHD) 2025, the Bhitai Dental & Medical College (BDMC) celebrated with enthusiasm, bringing attention to the crucial connection between oral health and overall well-being. This year’s theme underscored that maintaining good oral hygiene not only benefits mental health but also plays a vital role in physical and social well-being. The event featured an insightful presentation by BDMC’s dedicated team of dental health professionals, exploring the latest global oral health status and the far-reaching consequences of poor dental hygiene.

The presentation shed light on the strong correlation between oral diseases and systemic health conditions. Studies show that untreated oral diseases are linked to serious health risks such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and periodontal infections, which can contribute to complications like premature birth and low birth weight. Furthermore, tooth loss and chronic oral pain can severely impact an individual’s self-esteem, leading to anxiety and depression. The discussion also highlighted the disproportionate burden of oral diseases among low-income populations, where limited access to affordable dental care exacerbates health inequalities. Additionally, rural communities often lack dental professionals and preventive care services, while elderly individuals face increasing challenges related to tooth loss and accessibility to proper oral healthcare.

Beyond raising awareness, BDMC emphasized proactive solutions and global initiatives that can help curb the prevalence of oral diseases. Key preventive measures discussed included the promotion of fluoride toothpaste, the importance of regular dental check-ups, and the implementation of widespread community education programs. The presentation also explored policy-driven initiatives such as taxation on sugary products, stricter regulations on tobacco consumption, and the enhancement of public dental services, all of which contribute to better oral health outcomes worldwide.
Following the enlightening session, BDMC organized a health walk from the dental college to the medical college, reinforcing the commitment of future dental professionals toward advocating for better oral health awareness. The event served as a call to action for both the medical community and the general public, reinforcing the message that oral diseases are largely preventable with proper education, timely interventions, and equitable access to quality dental care.
With a firm belief that a healthy mouth leads to a healthy body and mind, BDMC continues to champion the cause of oral health, ensuring that awareness translates into action. As the institution remains dedicated to fostering the next generation of dental professionals, it urges everyone to prioritize oral hygiene and contribute to a healthier, more confident society.
